The Official EF Discussion Thread
Yeah, I've heard nothing but bad things about OBX. It's really hit and miss. I think there's a post somewhere around here where someone who had Mfactory, Quaife, and OBX LSD's did a runout test, and the OBX was out of round straight from the box. That is unacceptable IMO, regardless of price. This same person switched from Quaife to Mfactory due to the ownership change.
I know the Quaife cost quite abit more then the OBX. I just really didnt want to have 1000 bucks in my tranny. Any of you guys running a LSD? What do you guys have? Someone said to go ahead and have new 3rd gear syncro installed while its apart. Where is the best place to buy them at?

I would go with Kaaz or Mfactory. Have only heard good things about each. I have a lot of Mfactory stuff and it all looks top notch, doubt they would cheap out on the LSD's. Stay away from OBX imo.
i need some non- EF Advice...
My current daily is an 01 Prelude and now that im putting my crx together Im ready to buy a truck/trailer to haul the car. A close family friend is selling a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer LZT with under 75k on it for a little under 5grand. the truck is mint condition, old man driven, serviced regulary, already trailer hitch ready. I have always had Hondas and am a little reluctant on a chevy but theres no honda to tow with.. I have searched pages on recalls and known problems for the truck and nothing too major has come up (every chevy needs a trans eventually) So im looking to you guys for any reviews or opinions on chevys, tow vehicles, and any other advice. I know a couple guys in here are trailoring(is that a word) there cars. thanks.
bad picture.. tough angle inside the booth... but you get the idea... (dont mind that tacky gold strut fork, it was only used to make the car rollable to the shop!)

Well after doing research all night and all day today I am leaning more towards the Mfactory one. Its 650 compared to the 400 price tag of the OBX. Now I was going to have it installed for 200. I am thinking that after watching this...
http://www.evans-tuning.com/videotec...tial_swap.html
...I might be able to do it myself and save the 200 bucks and put it towards a better LSD. Only thing is I have never taken a tranny apart and I am hoping this job isnt going to be over my head. Any you guys install your own?

However, it does need to be rebuilt from time to time and you'll get fun clicking noises when you turn (due to the clutches)

If this is a street car, I DO NOT RECOMMEND the Kaaz. A Quaife or MFactory will suffice.

I hate Chevy's, but if memory serves me, those things had a suhweet inline-6 in them with lots of power (and tow power!). Having a tow vehicle kicks major ***...seriously, I don't ever want to live without one. If the truck is under 5g's and was taken care of then that Chevy could last you a long time save for standard repairs. Do they have a solid rear axle?
Here's my set-up.

Do it.

Btw, what thickness (gauge) sheetmetal is everyone using to weld up unecessary engine bay holes? Last break I finished completely stripping down the engine bay (took out everything including BMC, all plugs, deleted brackets, etc.). Next break hopefully I'll have time to pick up a welder and start mocking up the brake tuck.
The install is cake, dont worry about it, its a nice learning process. Make sure you check your case shim thickness and you should be fine
Well after reading more I find they do make one for cable b16...i guess they just started or something..idk.
They case shim thickness is the only part idk about. I mean I am sure I can take the old one out and put the new one in..but what all else do I have to do?

ouch. Hope he gets back to me soon. If not, live and learn i guess. I just hate scammers, but too much on my plate right now to deal with it.
Anything new with your ride james? I finally got back home and slapped my ee9 bumper + license plate bracket on. Looks pretty slick :p.

take some picture
i still want but interchanging bumper everytime i want to do something new is getting to be a pita.
I haven't done anything to my car lately other then look @ it and make sure it still in my garage.
Let me know how the rebuild tranny goes. Thats th eonly reason i haven't done mine yet...money, but i have lots of time
the only issue or major factor i heard about is resealing it should be done by someone who has done it before.

drop the diff in the case with no gears and bolt the halfs together and measure the tranny case to bearing clearance in the pass axle well. Its supose to be 0-.004" so figure hte distance and look up hte correct shim.
I found a spare d series tranny I have laying around thats no good. I have been practicing taking it apart and stuff...not to hard. Maybe I might try tackling this job myself after all.
damn you and your ee9 bumper, damn straight to unicorn land

.Also just sent some money for a rear glow garnish. Yay for spending unnecessarily during this economic recession
.
Me on the other hand is spending more now then I ever have.
Well I have my extra D series tranny completly apart. Wasnt hard at all....looks like b series is basically the same thing. I will have some pictures up later of the carnage that was done to this tranny. Its saddddd.
Anyone ever use that Gunk out stuff in the oil. I just dont really know much about the d series motor I have and though about running that through there just to try cleaning it out alittle. Then after a oil change its time to slap some insurance on the thing and start driving...I have to say tho its one of the ugliest crx's I have ever seen..haha, the body damage is scary!
So what your saying is put the new diff in with nothing else in the tranny. Bolt the tranny back together and then measure the clearance like you said....just making sure i have this correct..

I forgot to respond to this in my previous post and I'm too lazy to edit and quote.

Nice Set-up! that trailer is ****. I hate Chevys too... but it does have the inline-6 and Yes it does have a solid rear axle. I figure for under 5g's ill have a reliable daily and tow vehicle that wont kill my pockets like a V8 would. I may use the extra cash from selling my prelude to buy an extended warranty just in case of any major problems. Also need to buy a trailer! Only part killing me is that the truck is dark blue.. not my first choice, but color doesnt matter.
Ive been dding toyotas for hte last 5-6 years zero issues.Im in buffalo, aka the shithole.

Do u have a traction bar? or does that radiator fit perfect without modification?
