Which time? First, second, or third?

After the second he finally braced the SSAShite to my satisfaction... it was a MANLY brace made from an old Y8 intake support and you could stand and jump on the turbo with only the brace bolted to it. It took him less than 100 miles for the center of the collector to blow out a dime sized chunk of metal... so, yeah, expletive SSAShite, and expletive my opinions on bracing manifolds constructed from crap out of the cheapest possible materials.

That's either #1 or #2

#2 was the time that took out his radiator, if that jogs your memory.

I talked to an engineer at Holset for a while via email and we figured that the best turbo for my application is an HX40 cold side with an HX35 14cm2 turbine housing bolted on. The part numbers he gave me are:
3591015 HX40W
3591018 HX40W
3537021 HX35 Turbine Housing

The Pricing my local Holset dealer gave me are:
3591015 HX40W Stock @ Holset $1335.28
3591018 HX40W Mid Feb. $1407.57
3537021 HX35 Turbine Housing Stock @ Holset $244.10
Freight/tax not included in quote.

now keep in mind that is Canadian funny money (worth 87 American cents) but still with prices like that I might as well get a GT35R from Phoenix Turbo, which I would prefer dealing with hands down. Dealing with diesel shops makes my brain bleed.

I think I'm going to email back the shop and tell them I want a reman turbo, new stuff is not in my budget. Also, those HX40Ws probably cost an arm and leg because of the internal wastegate that I don't want or need. So I'll contact Holset and try to get a part number for a similar turbo with no wastegate.

Thoughts?

or find the right sources to get what you need...

pickup a decent hx40 for 2-300 from a diesel shop...buy the new turbine housing for 200...and call it a day...4-500 turbo instead of a G!

I'm also not prepared to spend the money for a GT35R...

So the search continues.

Message "bladetwister" on ebay, he told me he could put together a rebuilt hx35/40 for ~$600.

In his words "I could make that in the dark with my good hand tied behind my back."

thats a decent price...but i think w/ some callin i good get it a lil cheaper...but 600 for a turbo capable of 60+cfm/min you really cant complain w/ a killer spool w/ a decent sized motor...

holsets are easy...4 bolts & that dam huge clamp

Look, nothing against Phoenix Turbo, my boy Trav-*** has purchased $2200 worth of stuff from them in the last two years and is very happy.... BUT

It has been discussed in this thread a couple different times where to go for warrantied reman or brand new HX35 for under $600. htturbo has the HX40 "hot swappable" compressor and housing for $200 for when you absolutely need 700 whp because 550 just isn't cutting it. IF you're looking to save a buck while still getting a great quality turbo AND you don't mind a little ******* around and custom one-off fabrication with non-standard fitment due to the HUGE compressor housing, Holsets are awesome.

If you want to buy a bunch of highly reputable off the shelf parts and run known pieces that bolt right together without fuss, Holsets aren't for you. Maybe they will be better supported in the future, but those are the criteria you use to decide what is for you, at this time, in my mind.

hi there fellas...

this thread is really too long to read at once... maybe over a long weekend...

i just have a quick and fairly simple question... i have heard many times that since the holset is a DIESEL turbocharger, it will not be able to handle the exhaust temps on a petrol engine, because diesels get up to 6-700 degrees, and petrol go close to the 1000s...

is there something true about this or is it just some buggers that are skeptics cause they didnt find out bout this turbo themselves? any personal experience with running decent boost and lifetime of the holsets??

thx,

eddy

ps: i have a brand new holset, internally wastegated hx30w for sale... if some1 is interested, drop me an email: tricked_nismo@hotmail.com

ill tell you one thing...nothing happened after a solid half hr of beatin on my whip when the turbo was glowing bright red....it was def hotter than a over...and its still fine so yes you can use diesel turbos on a petrol (gasoline) car

if any of you guys remember my freinds car from a few pages back, this was his first run, well after he ditched the deltagate and got a tial like i told him to.

setup

94 dx hatch
92 b18a
mahle forged 8.8:1 pistons
hx35w
jrc 8" ic
crome
rc 550's
arp rod bolts
b16 cable tranny w/obx lsd
stock b18a axles
homemade log mani
full 3" exhaust with no muffler
greddy type s bov
tial 38mm 12psi
225/50/15 bfg's

this was the first pass. later passes made more mph, but no better e.t. best mph was 112. something. he was launching off the two step set at 4500(was originally set up for street tires) i didnt have my laptop with me to move it up. car was really bogging out of the hole.

car looks way better now. he had some gsr fat fives on it, but then he mounted the 225/50's on some 7" wheels.

this thing boosts quick. starts to spool in the low 3's, with full boost of 12 psi around 4000-4200. newest mod is a 15psi spring he installed last night. gonna try to get to a dyno on the 18th in mobile,al.

future mods include a vtec head. if anybody has one for sale pm me.

gonna try to get some fresh pics.

the night before this run, he ran a heads, cam, intake 89 coupe(mustang) with tons of suspension mods, both were on dr's and the mule got him by a fender. he was also at the track with us, and ran a 12.78 at 107.

then he sprayed it and ran a 11.6

I am dynoing my holset setup tomorrow w/ tony1. I have a forged internal stock bore/stroke b16, HX35 w/ bullseye turbine side and 3-4inch flared open DP, 880cc, and 2.5bar motorola.

Anyone care to guess how much boost/power I will be able to run/make on pump gas?
