Holy **** that's nasty!! The holset engineer said that the hx is very similar to the hy, but a little less efficient. You would have to email them for that map. The way I got him to give me the hx40 maps (though he may have given them to me anyway) is that I said the hy was too small for me. He said if the hy was to small there would be no reason to look into the hx35, so he sent me the hx40 maps. I only have the hy35 and three hx40 maps.

i emailed him and laughed about how hard it is to try and keep the hy from surging while trying to keep traction w/ a 1.8 4 cylinder.

he laughed and said fwd sux, offered all of his services, and sent me a few maps to boot. I never downloaded the hx30 one that he sent me cause I'm pretty much set on the hy35, but i got the hy35 maps again

You dont have to lie to these guys, most of them are happy to be of service. They are turbo engineers, not deisel dickswingers.

Yeah, it wasn't cause I wanted to lie to him, I had just stated in the original email that was forwarded to him that the turbo was for a deisel tractor pull engine. I could not necessarily take the statement back.

So hy35 has a more efficient compressor than the hx35, but what about the turbine side? Isn't the hp potential of the compressor severely handicapped by the smaller turbine?

I am curious to measure backpressure vs boost with an hy35 vs an hx35, and see how that affects the hp output.

I'm also still curious as to how the oil supply line is connected on the diesel. I've never heard of a turbo surviving with only 5 psi..

I used the wrong conversion for that. The maximum pressure is ~72psi and the minimum is 30psi (when engine is on load). Sorry about that.

Just take a look at the hy comp map. You're not gonna run outta room on this turbo. @ pr = 2.5 it will efficiently flow 50lb/min. You won't run out of turbo unless you are looking to make 550hp+.

As a side note you might have to throttle the oil pressure down just a bit to lower the wot oil pressure as it is sometimes 80psi+ on these engines.

man, I hope no one tried to drop their oil supply presure down too much..I knew that was bs!

Anyway, I'm not disputing that the hy compressor is more efficient, I'm just theorizing that the increase in compressor efficiency isn't enough to offset the higher backpressure of the small exhaust housing, thereby limiting the hp potential of the hy to less than that of the hx35. Did the holset 'engineer' even mention the smaller exhaust housing?

Once again.......I told the holset engineer that the hy was too SMALL for me and he said in that case he wouldn't even send me the hx map because it was basically a less efficient version of the hy.

I was confused because you posted pics of your hy35, but then then you said you told the engineer it was too small for you..but now I see you were just trying to get more info in general. ugh..anyway, my goal is to exceed 600whp, so I guess I'll be getting an hx40. However, after glimpsing your 3 different maps for hx40s, I am unsure about what to get. How can you tell the hx40s apart, and how significant are the differences anyway?

For what it's worth, alot of the earlier HY35's had the same comp wheel as the HX35's.. I believe anything before 02. I think when the Holset guys talk about the HY wheel being more efficent, I think they're talking about the newer wheels than most are finding on wrecks/ebay.

hey, does anyone know about the HE351CW? They come on some of the new dodge diesels, and look like a bigger hy35. I'm about to start researching this now..

that would be a nice pre-built upgrade...although i def would have to say that 9cm turbine housing is gonna choke down the compressor...

Default Need holset Measurements

Hi,
I am building an oil kit for a HX35W that i bought that is still in transit.
I'll need the thread size going into the oil inlet, and the drain flange mounting space. If anyone can measure these or has the measurements on hand then it would be a great help to me.

From what I can tell the inlet on the hy35 looks to be -6an fitting. I only know this cause I tried and tried (like a dumbass) to fit a 3/8 npt fitting into it and after like 5mins realized what I was doing.

another Question or two. What is the exhaust flange on the divided HX35W? is this a T3 or T4 flange? Also for the hot side, is the Vband a normal 3" vband? so I would just need to get a Vband flange and a Vband Clamp? to make my Downpipe?

Thanx!

Any cheap places to get flanges? or is it just
http://www.atpturbo.com and
http://www.ebay.com ?
