ok.. kinda new to this holset thing.. apparently about 2 years behind by the start date on the thread, but it's cool.. anyways.. i'm lookin to make about 300-350 on a z6 with vitara pistons and i've got everything else figured out except for the manifold and the turbo.. my setup so far includes
Z6 block and head
vitara pistons
eagle rods
tial 38mm wastegate
greddy type s bov (probably)
treadstone intercooler (egay)
Zex 59300 Cam
stock valve train (for now)
stock IM
so.. here's where i'm stuck.. i've been thinkin that either an hx30 or an hy30 would be best, but due to a seemingly VERY limited availability, i'm looking at other alternatives.. would an hx35 be too much/big?? also.. i read till about page 40ish or so but didn't find much on the D series half of the field.. also, decent quality manifold to spool that bitch would be nice (by decent i mean <<< full race, << 600 dollars, > SSAC.. suggestions would be great.. thanks guys

You either want to pair cylinders for an HX35, or run an HY35 with a traditional single turbine inlet manifold.
You should run a regular old fashioned log, IMO. Nothing spools a turbo faster, and it is HT's favorite manifold by a large margin: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2008014
You might also consider a different turbo entirely, HX/HY35's are pretty big (and HX30 are freaking tiny) unless you are looking for a drag racing powerband. Unless you're a good driver it might be a bit laggy on the street.

haha.. just the person i was wanting to reply lol.. "expert" come to mind??
yeah.. anyways... i was considering a 50 trim T3/T04E for this, but no one can give me a straight answer on that either.. some people say "oh yeah.. that's THE turbo you want.. nothing else" then others say, "you're an idiot.. why would you want something like that?? you should get a xxxxx" and it just goes from there..
with my lack of experience, and it being obvious that everyone has their own opinions based on THIER experiences, i don't know what i want/need and there are NO turbo single cam's ANYWHERE near me that i know of that i would be able to compare some different setups, only a SSAC b20, and a 600+hp 60-2 powered GSR hatch, and a 550+ hp coupe..
i've been looking at the log manifolds and with the price and the spool times, i think that's what i'll be goin with.. it wouldn't be a daily driven car, so the streetability wouldn't be a huge factor to me.. i know i probably shouldn't ask this because of some rule or another, but what do you think it would hit full boost at? also, i understand that the hy35's like to be around 20 or so psi.. would that be acceptable for this setup?? fjt was running like 32 psi on his right (i know that's way above what i want to make, but just saying..) i would say i'm decent, certainly not the best, but i've had people that have reputations of being EXCELLENT drivers in my area tell me i'm damn good but i'm not one to boast myself up nor does "some guys" opinion really matter.. thanks for your time and i apoligize for the hella long post.. (i would pm you but i can't)

Never had a Holset on a single cam to say, but a .50 T04E with a stage three .63 AR turbine is a fine turbo. For a log mani it'll start to spool at 3000 and have 8-10 psi by 3500 with lightning spool from there.
You get a few hundred rpms slower spool with one of the tubular manifolds, typically, but sometimes those spool just as quickly if not quicker than logs. Manifold dynamics can be really strange.

ok cool.. i was just looking at these because of the affordability of them.. and they're used on millions of factory motors for SOME reason so i figured they would be somewhat more reliable than something else.. but at this moment i realize i'm talking about reliability with a turbo sohc.. lol.. go figure.. i'll keep lookin into it.. i'll probably PM you sometime in the near future. thanks Mr. Davis..later,
I like the Holsets because they are big shaft OEM turbos and last a good long while.
You get comparable results out of Garrett turbos, as well, although the T04/T3 units tend to have shorter lifespans since the T04 wheel is heavier than the T3 shaft/bearings were designed for. You still get tens of thousands of miles out of them, and they are the best bang for the buck for someone who can't afford/build the custom manifolding required to fit a bulky HX35 into their engine bay.

just bid on it.
so here is my experiance so far. I just killed my sc61 and came accross my buddy's H1C he took off his cummin's . I picked it up for 100 bucks. Im running a b16 with wiesco gsr pistons (aprox 8.2:1) with eagle rods, stock sleeves and stock b16 head with gsr cams 750cc injectors hondata s300 3.5bar zeitronix map and wb. Now my sc61 would hit full boost (18psi pump 30 race) about 6k 1&2 and 4500 in 3&4 gear so im use to lag. I took out the H1C with a 18cm housing and it hit 12psi at 8500 (red line) in 1st, 20 psi at 7500 in 2nd, a 24 psi at 6500 in 3rd That is on a 18psi spring no boost controller. I plan on getting a smaller 12 - 14 cm 2 housing then will take it to the dyno. My goal is to hit 400+ whp. Im at a little disadvantage because I live 5600 ft above sealevel though.
Here are some of the useful links i have found in all my research. It never hurts to duplicate Imo.

how much you looking for? for the life of me i can't find a compressor wheel for my h1e and it seems like my only choice might be to just buy another h1e until a compressor wheel becomes available.

ive got a a good hx35 center section $50.00 new compressor wheel for a h1c and housing to match it $150.
also have a wh1c compressor housing which has some small scratches from the fan blade hitting it , perfect if you want to make a hybrid with a hx55 wheel.

Everyone has problems w/ the 9cm^2 housing at high flow. This holset 3 series seems like a double edged sword. I've come near the limit of 91 octane + my tuning skillz + my hy35 setup and it is nowhere near maxing the turbine out, pulls all the way to redline.
I would love to get on a dyno with some race gas and see what the hy35 can do for me, but that wont happen anytime soon. I wouldn't want this turbo to spool any slower yet it seems silly to run the smaller housing with the large compressor. If I did it again I would do paired cylinders on a 12cm^2 to get similar spool while taking advantage of the compressor.

this seams to be the biggest import oriented and most informative holset thread ive found online so i figured i would ask a few questions.
i have a VW vr6 motor 2.8, and im thinking about getting either an h1c or possible a hx40 to run on it. A lot of people i know use gt40s and gt42rs on there vr6's and im wondering what i could expect from either one of those holset turbos.
i know i probably sound like a noob but im new to this whole holset thing, wondering if anybody had compressor maps for either one of those..
thanks for the info so far
