I'm just a guy who owns an eF that had a question.
I'm going to turbo my 89 Si. I just found a D-Series
TDO4 Carb legal snail with all the carb documentation. I thought it was a B-Series but it was actually a D-Series so I'm good to go. I live in Cali
so I thought what the hell I'll boost my eF. So in the future I won't ask
any more boost related questions in this thread.
Good luck with having a carb legal turbo kit on your EF. Just because there are legal turbo kits out there for other Honda chassis', it doesnt mean its legal to put the kit(s) on your EF.
Everything that I've read says that it will be fine. Why do you think it won't pass?
i'll never forget the day my car passed illinois emissions (sniffer test) with no cat, a bisimoto crazy cam, turbo, 2.3 liter.
SO ROCKIN. we gave it a perfect street tune, and i RIPPED up and down the street to get turbo glowing hot, and waited until there was no wait, pulled right in, onto the rollers, etc. it passed immediately on the "fast pass" idle test, and out i went.
i promptly laffed.

Call a state ref and have your questions ready. Dont be surprised if he says its a no go.
only where you live....northwest indiana is TOUGH with emmissions.
my buddy lives in dyer, and we had to fab a couple of v-band-installed sections for cats, and get him a different program to pop in, just to pass , once a year.
illinois recently switched to ObD2 only...so i dont have to do it EVER AGAIN. YUPS

First off, you're most likely referring to a Z6. That engine is not the same D thats in our cars. Secondly, even if you have a Z6 it still wouldnt matter becuase you cant just use the turbo and call it "legal." You'd have to use the whole kit! Thirdly, even if you have the whole kit you cant use it on our cars without modification. Modification of any sort is not allowed.

you said you check garret turbo and its not listed. so what brand of turbos are smog legal?
I am sorry you have to disagree with SuperB But by disagreeing with him you are also disagreeing with the state of California. As a Smogger I agree with him.
All modifications that are emission related have to be C.A.R.B. approved period. (California Air Resources Board) I did check to see if any Garret turbo's are legal on the carb list and they are not. Therefore you are responsible to make it legal. Next time you buy any mod you need to check for a carb number. I am sorry for you being a noob but we all have had to learn somehow. As a smogger we can lose our job if we pass a car that is not legal. I like my job and I am not risking it for anyone.
SB is also correct on a visual inspection you will fail. It doesn't matter if your car will pass the exhaust sampling or not.
I do agree with you about the Hotrods and such, but it is a law and what can we do but abide by it.
You can remove the illegal parts and put back on the stock stuff for the test and then put it back on.
Welcome to California....
^^^^That is from a guy who actually does smog in California for a living. I will do some more research. The main part that makes a turbo kit legal is the snail I do know that. Will continue my research.

I just read the California Air Resources Board PDF on this exact turbo kit and you're right about it being used for the 92-95 except for the Del Sol. But, I also read that smog stations only look up the number, check it, and that's it. So I guess I need to call the state ref and ask.
got the number.
I def.. need to find before I go forward. Thanks.

Smog "techs" and state ref's are so unlike each other it isnt even funny. Dont bother asking your local smog tech/shop questions. You will understand a lot more once you make the phone call.

A ref will tell you to make that turbo kit work, you'll have to get a z6 motor from a del sol and get it ref'd first. Then you can slap on CARB legal parts for a del sol.
Exampe: My '97 coupe is reff'd with a 98 ITR motor. So if I put an aftermarket intake on it, the intake and accompanying CARB sticker must be for a '98 ITR.
Yeah, ummmmmmmm. I'll call but if I have to go through any kind of bullshit I'm just selling the turbo and I'm done.
I just wanted a quick daily but I'm toooo old to be dealing with too much stuff like this. Arghhh!!

Wes Vann discussed this turbo kit deal with a ref he knew. They both came to the conclusion that if you had an EF, a Z6 swap, and a complete legal turbo kit at your disposal, the combo would not be legal due to the modifications to the kit that would be needed (first thing that comes to mind is the charge pipe routing). Modifications to the kit in any way or form voids its legality, no matter how small or insignificant the changes may be. Is it BS? Of course..but so is the whole ref process in general.
Phew.........so now I'm only out a couple of hundred bucko's. I just need to
totally need get out of the game. I love my ef and such, but as we all know building cars, dealing with them and such is a pain and the ****. Love/hate, etc. I think this just shows me I need to sell my eF. Blah.
