any qualms with that? should i wetsand between the coats of color?

If your doing it yourself and don't care how much time you spend on it, do 2 nice coats of clear let it dry completely. Then sand it with 1000 till flat then reclear. If your booth or whatever your spraying in is clean enough you wont need/want to cut and buff anything. Results may vary as I don't know how much peel you'll end up after reclearing because you might just suck at painting and will need to cut and buff anyways.
Do a test panel this way and see how much flatter/nicer it come outs...

Usually I can just look at most things when I have it in my hands and say "oh yeah I can do this and make It work"
but like you said I dont have them on my hands....

basicly when i put the ek sides on my hatch ( i was the one with the teal hatch a few pages back that had it ) i had measured out the side skirt, trimmed off what i didnt need. lined it up underneath the car, marked where my holes were going to be, made pilot holes and used self taps to hold the lip up.

Hey deftone I been doing body work and painting since I was 15 yrs old learned from my day who was doing it for 20+yrs And mike 9571 speaks the truth
Here is what i do i put 1 coat of sealer then 3 coats of paint them i will put 3 to 4 coats of clear because no matter how good it looks i will wet sand teh **** out of it starting with 1000 grit then i move to 1500 then i go to 2000. By this time u have sand about a coat and 1/2 off the clear
Then depending on how i feel sometimes i will wet sand it with a DA and 3000 grit velcro pad by then it almost has a shine back then i use a 3M cutiing compound go to a a good 3m poishing compound then I will hand polish it with plum crazy.
Know with this process the finish will look like if u leaned on it u would fall through it

Just so you dont mess up sand with 1500, then go over those spots with the 3000. The 1500 can believe it or not leave scratches that the 3000 will take care of. Then do as Urban said, start off with a heavy compound then finish off with some swirl mark remover. The heavy compound take a little while but the swirl mark remover moves real fast.
