In your earlier post when your turbo arrived, you were asking about #'s and seemed to be unsure about what turbo you got..so it is an hx40? What size exhaust housing does it have?

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by rorik &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Surge has to do with the compressor spinning at a certain speed vs. the engine spinning at a certain speed. The only way you can surge a turbo is to put the wrong exhaust housing on it. That is the only way you can spin the compressor fast enough to surge for the amount of air the engine is moving. What you described actually inceases the chances of surging, putting an hx35 hot side with an hx40 compressor. does this make sense?

I want to know does the hx40 come with different exhaust housings, what the A/R is, and how much bigger the turbo is than the hx35, because I'm try to figure out spool characteristics for it on a 1.8 ls or gsr. </TD></TR></TABLE>

its about another 11cfm/min...and i have no idea about the turbine housing but i know its hugggge w/ a 4" vband discharge on most...the reason behind the turbine housing swap is so that it will spool up faster...i dont know the exact definition of surging...but to my understanding its when the motor is more restrictive than the turbo's output...i wouldnt wanna try to spool a hx40 on a 1.8...personally it just wont have enough exh energy...w/ a stock exh i spool my hx35 w/ 12cm housing between 4500-5000...open dp about 4k....if you want any more lag than that...you wont have a useable powerband...unless you plan on draggin it out to 9-10k...

I thought you were trying to figure out the spool characteristics on the hx35. I guess I misunderstood you.

Here are some picts of the turbo.

Next to my garrett

I'll post some picts of my setup when it's all together, the engine is in and just waitin' for the all the turbo goodness.
Oh, yea, the turbine housing isn't split so hopefully it will still spool alright. Anyone know where I can get a different comp housing, that wierd outlet will be a pain to plumb up.

That's a Hy35 off a 2004. (or HE35 per Holset engineer, depends on who you talk to.)

I posted a link to some maps I have posted. I think my link was on page 11 or 12. Manuals and Autos have the same exhaust housing 2004-present.

You mean this??

Strange this says hy35w, but this turbo is not water cooled. Oh, well, it was free 99 right??

I was just wondering even if I built a split housing manifold for an hx40, would it still spool up too late to be worthwhile..? I guess dsm guys use these, maybe I'll see what kind of results they're getting, although it will be Damn hard to find someone who has one with a split housing manifold. Maybe I'll just get one and see how it worls, I don't know. I know I can't lose with the hx35, but I'd rather grow into something than out of it..

Crap, I coulda swore that I read in one of the manuals that the "w" stood for water cooled. Prolly just confusing it with another brand.

Yeah, when you first posted the maps I tried to check em out but the url didn't work, so I thought it was just a bad link.

&lt;-------retarded
Now that I tried again it worked.

Man is that the sweet spot for this thing??? That is HUGE!!!!!!! I got a chubby just lookin at it.

What eff % is that island akin to??

It looks like at a pr of 2 (15psi) which is what I will be running this thing flows up to ~52lb/min! ~43lb/min max @ pr = 1.68!

Wow, I can't wait! Quick spool, high flow rates with great efficiency! Vrooooom, shift, pssssst, vrooooom, shift, pssssst..............umm brb, I think I just spooged myself.

I just realized something, if I build a split housing manifold, won't the internal wastegate only vent 2 cylinders? That would be retarded...

I wonder if it would be worth it to get a non wastegated housing and use 2 wastegates to vent each side separately..

vening two cylinders would work just fine, if you cut half the turbos exhaust flow, its gonna slow down drastically. or you could get a non wastegated turbine housing and use one wastegate and place it on the manifold, that is, have two runners going to the wg, one from either side of the collector
