if you arent using gas with mig you use wire that has flux in the core... when the flux burns around the weld it releases gas to provide your inert invironment...
it is really just wire feed arc welding without the gas

Default ?

I am curious do TIG and OXY/ACC use the same filler??

also I am working on my first collector with my mig machine and it is a real PITA trying to get in the small spaces... I was wondering if anybody else on here has tryed to mig up a tubular manifold or even just a collector. If so maybee you can share some tips or pics of how it turned out?

I've migged all of my collectors/manifolds and have found it easiest on my machine atleast, to turn up the speed of the wire and the voltage up quite a bit as well. I've had to have the wire sticking like two inches out of the gun to get into some tight places. sucks when you move your hand and the side of the collector connects with the wire though!

That is a nice little business you got there man! It's always nice to see entrepreneurs(sp?) out there making it for them selves. I'm hoping to be to the point of opening a shop sometime in the next year or so! Looks good though man! You got the ball rolling in the right direction!!!

did you gring down those shapes you cut, or does it cut that smoothly? the plasma torches I have used in the past didnt cut that well.. I figure they were prolly under powered...

that was with no grinding. it cuts fairly smooth, but still requires some finishing. none was done on that stuff pictured, which was just messing around. it's also supposed to cut cleaner if you grind down it down to bare metal, which i didn't do either.

the miller plasma i used is supposed to be pretty strong.

well im looking for a tig welder now, and seen that Maxstar... would the maxstar 150 be enough for most welding. i dont knowwhat kinda thickness it can weld but at the most i might be doing 1/2inch (or 3/8) steel like a flange. i dont want to end up with something that wont be powerful enough later.. i like the maxstar because of its size but the price difference between the maxstar 150 and 200 is like $1000 so im hope the 150 is good enough. let me know what you guys think. thanks

If i remmber that one doesnt have AC for AL welding, if you care. I would recamend spending the 450$ more and getting the 180SD, you can do everything with it.

EDIT

true but it weights 14x as much as the maxstar. i think 180sd needs the 230v while the maxstar can use both 120 and 230. id like to get this one if at all possilbe. so the maxstar can weld aluminum too? thats good but my mig can also, wouldnt you want to weld alum.with mig so it can feed faster? beats me iv never welded alum.
so 1 for the 180sd 0 for the maxstar

id get teh 180 over the maxstar for sure.... it might be heavier, but most people dont move there machines around much anyway... mine wieghs 500 lbs or so... it doesnt go anywhere I just ahve long leads and all for it.

Right now im TIGing my strut tower and under the hood seams together in my 240SX. Just laying down little beads about 3/8 in. long every inch or so. It is hard to weld cuase its so thin and it has alot of this body panel glue under neith of it. ...but it should turn out pretty descent, especially for having to weld in some odd positions for the first time.

Keep weldin'

No the maxstar cannot do AL. I have seen a mig weld AL and well, its just alot better looking when done with a tig.
