I currently have a non vtec OBD1 B18B1 in my 98 Civic EX, and I'm looking to upgrade to a B18C1 GSR motor. I'm wondering if there is any difference between the OBD1 and OBD2 motors. Could I get a OBD2 GSR motor and run OBD1 on it? I've searched around but can't seem to find any info on this particular topic.

 

There's 2 ways to do this swap.

1.do a obd2 to 1 convert on it buy buying the ECU jumper and running your stock engine harness and swapping OBD2 plugs to fit the OBD1 censors and just run the Vtec.

2. Swap all the parts on the OBD1 motor to OBD2,run the stock harness and get the OBD2 ECU for the motor and run the Vtec wire to it.


I would stay with the obd1, if you ever chip your obd1 ecu's its easier to chip and tune and there is more support...

 

Yeah that's why I want to stay OBD1. I'm planning on tuning it with chrome, and from what I have been told there is almost no emissions crap that OBD1 looks for, none of which I have on my car.

I was doing a search on OBD1 vs OBD2 and came across your thread. I know its a little old, but if it somehow reaches you, cool!

I have a 98 LS with lsvtec. Its got a B18B1 with B16 head (PR3). Its got a p28 chipped ECU with Hondata s300. I recently took it to emissions and they couldn't get a connection through my OBD plug. So, what do you do for emissions tests? To get passed them?

you have to convert back to obd2. you can either use an LS ecu and baby it, or use a gsr/itr ecu and wire in a knock sensor.

 

Or you could get an obd0 b series

Get a 96-99 P72, 96-97 P30 or 97-98 P73 and wire in a knock sensor for plug and play. Prepare for some check engine lights if your engine is missing some emissions pieces.

 

That was gonna be my next question, sort of. Its not gonna be as simple as removing my P28 chipped ECU and replacing it with a P73. I'm not sure what a knock sensor even is (guess I have some more reading to do). I'm hoping I can find an "under the table" kinda guy that can pass my emissions until I can work all this crap out. This is a little frustrating honestly. I was just looking for a DD to run up and down the highway with for work. <sigh>

Hip hip hooray for obd1 and nonexistent emissions testing. I'm running no cat with all kinds of non-CARB compliant parts and i could give zero ***** about it.

 

^ no emissions? Do you keep your car under certain mileage or something, you're exempt from emissions?

He probably lives like me in a state that only does visual and tests the gas cap and that's it.

Gigantic difference man....very big.

 

Had my EJ1 for 14 months. Never been subjected to an emissions test. Not even when i bought it. It varies from county to county.

 

Explains some things

 

I got a failed 02 sensor, no cat, 3 inch exhaust with a pair of resonators, and a folger's can out back. So yeah, i would fail miserably.

< 1994 OBD1 GSR motor, P28 ECU, 1997 OBD2 Car, Large Tube race header, cat delete, 2 1/2" all the way and no resonators to a 24" long magnaflow with 5" exit...
Loud as ****, Illegal as hell..
No Check engine light, no issues, my post cat O2 sensor is zip tied to my firewall...
Still passes inspection every year...
Its all about the setup

 

if you're running a p28, why do you even have a secondary o2 hooked up?

 

Thats the same with North Dakota and Minnesota...my STi has a 4" dp, 3" catless exhaust and burps backfires on hard shifting and downshifts...needless to say, it wouldnt pass emissions testing, not even a little bit.

 

Ive got a franken harness and if i unplug it i get no circuit activity upstream o2 CEL... very strange i know but i am here for tech insight on issues like that so bear with me... Just putting it out there that i am in fact running the setup he is looking at for 6+yrs without any major issue besides hybrid harness...

Yeah, was wired by a friend of my sister who was self proclaimed "honda tech", he did ok as far as reliability but I think he got something wrong in that o2 department, as yes I'm running obd1 ecu but still having to keep both o2's plugged in to keep upstream o2 circuit functioning.. There are some good sections in here about these kinds of issues.. Kindof the reason I joined.. So no worries not trying to diag my ride on this 2yr old bumped thread

 

Hello. My question is similar. What do I need to make a chipped 0bd0 ecu run in my obd1 92 hatch? Sorry if I am breaking any rules.....kinda new to the ECU world
