Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
Ok so I have a 2000 civic si has stock b16 head but on b20 block...I am having a bad lag in lower rmps...I just replaced spark plug wires as well as put in a set of ngk iriduims.. I know that the car should have more power than what it does my old si had wayy more take off..its like something is holding it back cant seem to figure out why. ALSO I just noticed a small leak at the bottom of vtec solenoid is this a pretty easy fix?

I read a few forums about maybe a vacuum issue so i considered using some sea foam on it to try and get it breathing better...I just purchased car a few weeks ago so Dont know too much about its past

I've been working on a low idle problem on my 95 coupe. I'm going to try and clean out my iacv in the morning because I'm told that should help. Id suggest giving it a try too.

I would suggest your PVC valve. Those lil things get gummed up after a while and cause the issue your describing. Cheap and easy to do.

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
have you checked for any codes? check engine light on/working?
is the block jdm or usdm? i ask because the usdm will have a knock sensor and crank position sensor the jdm block will not.
have you checked ignition timing?
have you checked for any vacuum leaks?
what ecu is running this b20vtec you have?
the vtec solenoid issue is very easy to fix
go to your honda dealer and order both vtec solenoid gaskets it should be around $30 for both and you can only get them at the dealer. takes 10-20 minutes to change both and all you need is a 10mm socket and ratchet.

I have not checked the timing on ignition but I recently got all the CEL to go off and seems to be running a little smoother.
I put some sea foam in my vacuum today to clean everything out and it did smoke for a decent bit also when pouring the sea foam into vacuum it spewed out a good bit at the front of motor under my header so i am beginning to believe I have vacuum issue somewhere there..
As far as the ecu goes I am not sure at all!! I need to check that...what would the ideal ecu be to run with b20a block with stock b16a2 head??
Also does anyone know what would be proper injectors would be for this setup? I wanna make sure I have the right amount of fuel going in

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
My b20v was idling super low when I first got it out the shop and I ended up replacing the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail with one I had laying around and that solved it all.

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
Yeah don't do this. NOT CHEAP.
My girl has had low idle issues. I have a stock d16y8 in my '99 EX. But I don't see how it could be TOO much different.
What I did was clean out my throttle body. It wasn't hard; just take the intake off of it. AutoZone sells throttle body cleaner. MAKE SURE you don't use the same crap to clean out the IAC sensor. Half hour job tops. Use a rag or towel that won't leave lint behind. i.e, don't use blue shop paper towels for it. It seemed to help and give me better throttle response.
Also could be the IAC sensor. Make sure it is for sure first though, considering how that part is $150. They make cleaner particularly for that. It's worth a shot.
I also put SeaFoam in and filled my car with premium (which hurt like hell but my car is worth it). And drove it hard for awhile. Seemed to help as well.
I now think I have an exhaust leak which is the main cause of loss of power for me. She struggles to get about 80 when she'd hit 90 no problem in the past. So my journey ain't over. But hope my experience helps SOMEWHAT.

Seafoam is most likely going to ruin your rings. Sounds like an ignition timing issue - rent a timing gun and check it.

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
Thanks for all the help guys. I def would like to do a cleaning on the throttle body and what not. When I first purchased the SI I thought I was getting a great deal but now I feel like im going to be dumping a good bit in this baby. Its a good thing i love em1 civics or id already have this thing up for sale haha.. Ill keep updating as i do more to fix the idle problem for now my list is as follows:
1. Spark plug wires
2. Spark plugs
3. Cleaned IACV
4. Fully cleaned vtec solenoid while at it
5. Sea foam through vacuum lines
After all this my CEL went off for a whole 24hrs on my way to work this evening it came back on Havent made it to autozone to see what code is spitting ill update soon

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
When I first read this I read "I'm having bad lag in lower rpms"
In no way did that make me think of an idle problem.
Cliffs: if your car is lagging I recommend checking the fuel pump and electrical.
If your car is idling badly refer to ronj@ht's signature iacv fitv

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
If you have a vacuum leak it would explain the poor idle AND the crappy low end. Also, that should just be fixed because its cheap and easy. Seafoam coming from the front of your engine sounds slightly alarming to me. I don't remember there bring anything on the front side of the block as far as vacuum ports or oil lines or anything (except the dipstick of course). I would recommend tracing this leak to see if anything major is cracked or has a bad gasket or something.

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
Jdm block does have a knock sensor. I have one. Just saying. Not ur problem tho. PVC valve is most likely your problem and also the cheapest to replace. If that doesn't work, next would be to clean ur ivac, throttle body and air intake sensor. Dump some good fuel cleaner in your tank and go from there. Good luck

Re: Em1 with problems in low RPMs HELP!!!
First off you don't need to go to autozone you only need a paperclip or wire
https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/how-pull-cel-d4-srs-abs-codes-code-lists-1901557/
Second you need to find out what ECU you have.
Thirdly there is a OBD2 P30 but it won't be plug and play, the P2T is the ECU that should be in it if its truly an Si. However if you can convert to OBD1 in your state a P28 with a custom rom burned to your specific setup and tuned would be the best ECU setup.
Pull your codes as report back.
