burning oil
my friends stock d16 unknown miles *cluster was swapped* has been burning a lot of oil.it smokes blue.once started up in the morning no smoke but while driving and engine warms up it would smoke constantly could this be bad valve guides or is his piston rings shot?this guy is really on a budget and hopefully its his head cause i have a spare one for him

Re: burning oil
that is true, except that he said the opposite..
op: unfortunately it sounds very much like rings are toast, and not valve seals. by all means do a compression test and/or cylinder leakdown test to confirm.

Re: burning oil
true, and neither is a rear main seal. but its the amount of labor it takes to replace these items that makes them a pain in the dick, not the price of the part.

Re: burning oil
It is possible to get good compression numbers and still have the oil control rings shot. If the Oil Rings stick to the pistons then they won't wipe the oil off the cylinder walls. If the compression rings are fine you could still yield good compression even though the oil rings are stuck and not doing there job which will cause oil to be burnt in the combustion chamber.
