Default Tial wastegate

I've got the 35mm one and it comes with a metal ring insert that goes into the bottom hole (exhaust mani hole). Is this ring necessary? Can I mount it without using this ring? I could not get rid of the leak without using the gasket (I've blown 3 already ) and as the ring protrudes slightly I could not get the wastegate to sit flush onto the mani.
