Question.... WTF is the point of a drift competition???

Jesus ******* Christ - READ the damn thread!
Let me give you a recap here:
Drift Lovers: "Drifting rocks!"
Track Drivers: "Grip driving is faster through the turns than drift"
Drift Lovers: "We know that but drifting is tight anyway"
Doriftos: "Well actually in certain isolated cases drifting is faster than grip"
Track Drivers: "No it really isn't"
Doriftos: "Yes it is - you are stupid if you don't think so - just ask the bus drivers in Tokyo that I know"
Track Drivers: "We don't need to - it is simple physics"
Doriftos: "Yes it is - you all are dumb and even though you have tons more practical experience on track than we do you are still wrong"
You: "Hey! Everybody knows drifting is slower through the corners so stop telling us"
See how your *** is way late and your addition is 99% useless? Your comments would fall in somewhere BEFORE the Doriftos came into it.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Bondurant Drifting School
2 Days, $2,495
2004 Summer Rates, Jun. 14 - Sep. 19: 2 Days, $2,095
Have you heard of the hot new form of racing called, “Drifting?” This exciting form of motorsports is all the craze in Japan and is exploding into the United States. High-speed marked courses with vehicles carrying sideways power slides throughout is the name of the game.
http://www.bondurant.com/courses/courses.html
I guess if the kids are going to be slingng themselves sideways into every turn, the'd might as well learn how to do it without dying.
(wishes he had the money for ANY Bondurant School racing/driving course)

Who cares?
Travis Pastrana jumps big hills and does tricks on his bike. I guess he's a ricer to all the people that actually race at motocross events.
Why do people jump out of air planes for fun?
Why do people run? Everyone knows bicycles and cars are faster.
To the original poster.....maybe drifting is fun to those who do it. I'm not a fan of it, but I don't let it bother me. They're having fun. Good for them.

thats not what im saying... you dont drift through the corner, you drift at the entrance to compromise for braking and to change your entrance angle. when you are exiting you arent drifting at all, any dumb **** would understand that you cant accelerate better when you dont have traction... your exit is full grip while some of your entry is a drift to rotate the car.

You = dolt.
Spend some time on a real track. If you are sliding at the entrance, you are sacrificing exit speed. Period.

Drifting is skillio! Controlling a slide is the sh@t. In my last autocross watching the front wheel drivers get slaughtered by the rear wheel drivers. As I watched S2K's just sliding into the corner at no loss of speed. Sliding and point their cars into the right direction.

Even if they are able to maintain their momentum, they arent accelerating

On a track you do - if all you do is maintain momentum until the exit, you are dead meat halfway down the straight
. Autox is a different animal.

Some good reading for people that are too lazy to find it.
Some people need to read this:

what the **** are you talking about? im not talking about track situations you retard, how many times have i stressed that? i dont know what to say to you because all you go back to is that "oh, i have more experience than you on a track so im right"... im not even talking about a track, im talking about tight corners than can be found wherever... i have several such roads a couple of miles from my house. take yourself out of your arena of expertise for just a second and realize that there are other situations in the world than just what you have experienced on your closed course.

</TD></TR></TABLE>
yes, but in a situation where you can compromise the sliding so that you are setting yourself up for a better exit it is beneficial. you enter the corner faster than you would to grip and then you slide and aim yourself for the better exit so that by the time you have traction again (which is a split second later) you have slowed down to the speed you would have been at when braking anyways but with the added benefit that your exit will be better. i dont know what kind of cars you drive, but once a car is sliding it doesnt keep sliding forever. once it has slowed down so that the tires are back under 100% grip you have traction again. after that point, if your momentum is in the wrong direction your tires will just skip and get flat spots but it is the drivers duty not to slide as fast or as idiotically.

That's the only place you should be pushing a car hard enough to lose traction in the first place, unless you are just retarded.
And yes there are tight 2nd gear turns on tracks I drive as well.

People with RACING experience are telling you that you are wrong. There is no magical road that exist where drifting/sliding/etc helps in any fashion other than slowing you down and looking uber cool.
Again...these people would own you on your best real world road anyday of the week. And not one of them would drift a corner.

And you can't get it through YOUR head that we are not talking about anything other than track driving. Where else would LAP TIMES matter? THAT is what we are talking about Einstein!
I couldn't give a rat's *** if drifting was faster around the hairpin outside of town. I am not racing anyone there. Telling me that it would be quicker in that instance means as much to me as telling me that Richard Simmons got a haircut.

good for you guys. i was not responding to anyone when i originally posted, i was just making a statement. i was not talking about track driving but you and rj took it upon yourselves to make what i said part of your argument. maybe if you guys read what i said in the first place then there would be no problems, but instead you took what i first said out of context and tried to twist it so that it would be in whatever category you guys were debating about. all i was doing was answering the thread starters question - which i did - i wasnt intending on getting into your guys' argument which is why i even stated that you guys were right from the begining. im sorry if you guys feel that im attacking you when all i was doing was using a scenario that had nothing to do with your debate.

so what, it might not apply to you but it might apply to someone else. the thread starter wanted an example of an instance of where it could be effective so i gave my personal feedback. you dont have to sit here and respond to everything that is said like it is a direct threat to your existance...
