NOFX & ERAN Very nice work I must say I have never seen a car this clean even off a showroom floor from a ferrari dealer. You two have a godgiven talent mad props to you both. If I lived anywhere near you guys I would pay you guys top dollar to detail my car but it is in horrid condition right now and a detail prob wouldnt help enough lol . Anyway my father has a 1967 camaro from when he was younger he bought it brand new and to this day everything is higher grade than mint. All parts are original from the factory excluding parts that need to be changed, He is down in the garage at least 3 hrs a day touching it up and your work here is the same if not better than his. When I get my car back to a decent shape with a new paint job etc. I will be using this thread for my detailing
Thank you NOFX for showing me your thread it will prove to be extremely helpful.
And Thanks Eran for noting not to wax after a new paint job I didnt know that.

A few questions I have for you guys though.

1 Where can I get a clay bar like what am I looking for when I go into the store and what exactly does it do?

2 I plan on getting my EK hatch painted a Championship white you said not to wax for a while how long should I wait and what should I be weary of after it is painted and I clean it?

3 Last but not least what do you guys do about cleaning the underbody of the car I Usually takeit to the car was using the power washing wand but obviously after that wheel thread im reconsidering.
Any help appreiciated thanks

bump because this thread is gold

NOFX/Eran,

If I were to use a swirl remover such as 3M Perfect-It II Rubbing Compound, at which step would I use it? My guess is after the polish and before the wax but what if I were to use a glaze?

I'm about blow a bunch of money on detailing products thanks to this thread

1. I have bought clay bars from Advance, Autozone and Shucks to name a few. Your local auto body supply shop should also have some of the products we use. Expect them to cost about $15 or so. When you get it home, break it into several pieces large enough to still fit in the palm of your hand. This way, if you drop one, you'll have more left over. If you drop the clay, throw it out! It will scratch your paint if you use it again.

Clay bars are meant to smooth off all the surface comtaminants off of your paint. Basically, it will make your car's paint feel like glass.

2. I'll have Eran field this one since I've never had to deal with fresh paint. Your painter should also know. I believe that it was at least a month until you wax it.

3. I spray down the underside of my car using the strongest hose setting I have. I use a normal garden hose and nozzle. I also make sure to scrub in all the wheel weels at the end of each wash.

This is a general list of what we use.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1781607

I tried using Nano Wax but I wasn't very happy with it. A friend of mine told me that it isnt so much like working with chucken grease after the first time, but I never tried it again since I was happy with Meguiar's products. So I can't say one way or another on it since I only used it on a small patch once.

A good glaze will also help to make your car shine. Directions are on the first page. A glaze might be harder to find but most auto body supply shops should have it. If you can't find it, Meguiar's Hand Polish has glazing agents in it (you usually follow up polishing with a glaze anyway).

I use it after clay barring, but before polishing. The bottle should actually recommend that you use a polish after the rubbing compound.

I mostly steer away from Turtle Wax. There are better products on the market for a comparable price.

And their new Ice line looks like little more than an attempt at getting people to buy their product because it offers being a quicker alternative.

Sorry, this is a hand detailing thread. As you can see in the instructions, we don't use a buffer for this kind of detail.

Glad it could help. Did you follow up with a polish, glaze and wax?

Remember:
Polish = Cleans
Glaze = Glosses
Wax = Protects

if my car doesnt need to be polished after a wash,

can i just apply glaze and wax?

what glaze do you use?

i apply all my waxes and stuff with a 6" orbital buffer so its just like doing it by hand.

I don't bother to glaze unless I've just polished. Otherwise you're putting glaze on top of wax.

I've been known to occasionally wax after a wash, but only if it was recently fully detailed (within the week) and hasn't been driven between the detail and the newest wax job.

Yes. It might not be as apparent to some because it's not as visibly reflective as darker colors are.

In fact white seems to be a big problem. People don't notice it when it first begins to "fade" aka oxidze. So later on down the road the car starts looking chalky. Then the paint needs much more work.

Think about how brand new white paint jobs look. Up close. In the shade when they reflect every little thing still. That's how you want your paint. Flawless or at least as close to flawless as you can get it.

Hell yes it is... Eran and NOFX thank you for all the great information and the awesome write up. I have recently moved and lost a lot of my detailing products and this will help me get back to where I am. I am "extremely" **** when it comes to my car and will spend hours on end cleaning and cleaning. I have even removed interior pieces so that i may clean under and even wash the pieces themselves. I recently did a quick wash/claybar/wax to see how it would work on my car... picked up a quick Meguires clay kit with microfiber towel at Autozone and applied the bar to half of my car. The paint is bad, but the texture from one half to the other is very noticeable. One side is as rough as sand paper and the other is as smooth as glass. I didnt go through the entire wash/clay/rubbing compound/polish/glaze/wax/wash but I will next time I wash my car and I imagine I will see even more improvement. Thanks again for the write up.

Hey NOFX, what do you think about Liquid Glass Automotive Polish/Finish? Is that any good? I've bought some supplies to follow these steps, but I only got the best stuff I could find at my local Discount, thanks!
