New pics. All these were done today. I know it's still not pro, but I'm feeling A LOT better about it than I was when I started! It's been a long time since I've felt this kind of motivation / drive ...

Hey guys, I'm probably going to be playing with my lincoln sp-135t this weekend and I wanted to get some suggestions/ starting points for the 2 things I'm going to weld. Of course I'll practice, but I don't have a lot of extra material to waste by trying a bunch of different settings.

1)aluminized tubing ( 2-2.5" JC Whitney bends)

2) Stainless Steel tube (3" exhaust bends)

I guess I'm looking for any advice on settings or technique. Can I use a 75/25 argon mix for both? How about wire materials/diameter?

Thanks

all i can say is i wouldnt touch those pipes for at least a week or two or until you are 100% fully confident in your technique. you will most likely burn through or end up with too much fill on the inside obstructing flow.

try stopping by muffler shops and ask if you can dig through their pipes they are throwing away. i've scored tons.

yeah thats a good idea. I wouldnt mind practicing on some sheet metal to get down the speed, are there any places that tend to throw that stuff out?

I was reading the hobart forum today and when it comes down to it, a few people said that the 75/25 mix works well with stainless flux core wire.

I brought some stainless pipes to school to experiment. I fusion-welded a few sections to see how it would go. It's really satisfying for some reason. I had imagined in my head for a long time what it would be like to weld pipes by fusion, and I don't know how, but it's EXACTLY what I imagined it to be. It's almost like I practiced in my head before ever even trying TIG. I think I may be obsessed.

Anyways, the welds are nothing crazy I admit, but I'm still proud. This was my first time welding pipes together, and I have 50 hours of TIG experience.

I am really itching to buy a machine now.

Here's me butt-welding two pieces of 1/16" 304. The box is a ghetto rig to purge the bottom side of the plates. In the pic I forgot to connect the argon line ... :banghead:

I'm really liking version 3. It has a more natural flow to it. Very nice.

I wouldn't even know where to begin making a manifold like that ...

How hard is it to get to all the welds on a manifold like that. I mean its not easy to get a nice bead when everything is right in front of you, but not you have to go into hard to reach places and so on...

Where could one begin to research basic welding technique/safety practices? I'm interested in learning about it, and maybe eventually learning how. I think you guys could probobly steer me in the right direction. Thanks

You should really wear long sleeve shirts. I'd rather sweat my *** off than get skin cancer.

True, but the way I weld, the light never hits my arms. I usually wear a work shirt too. Some of the guys in my class welded one day in a t-shirt and had both arms completely burned red ... I welded like this for 2 weeks and didn't have anything, at first I thought it was my skin that was more resistant, but after looking at the pics I think it's 'cause I weld pretty high and my arms are hidden by the table.

I will wear a workshirt now though, thanks for the heads up!

Quick question

Is it a really bad idea to weld in my sealed off un-vented basement?

that would be a universal YES. let's start by estimating the ratio of carcinogens in the air you're breathing in and out..

looks nice man! i wish i had a mig/tig that i could mess around with everyday. i had the same idea as you, make some strut bars outta mild steel tubes untill i learn tig. wish i had some pics of my work to post up! but sadly i dont.
i use the welder that is at my school. not sure what kind it is, but its heavy duty, enough for like 1/4 inch mild steel which is what i mainly weld on, but its not the only thing ive worked with.
i need a job!
