New Welding Thread!
of course i meant 200 amps LOL my bad, unless i was making manifolds out of soda cans
i think imma take a look at it, hope it is AC too so it can weld AL, if it cant then im **** out, cause i make intake manifolds which are always AL, ot my first log style exhuats mani soon, parts are sitting right here,
i hope steel is easy to weld, AL is easy to me and peopel say AL is a bitch, so im hoping steel is a breeze, a few beads rolled and i should be ok

I know this is not a Classifieds section, but thought it was the best palce for it and it might help some people that are trying to get started in the wonderful hobby that is... TIG welding...

Hey guys I have done a bit of mig welding before but want to get into tig now. What I was wondering is it not possible to buy a stick welder that has ac /dc and then attach a tig torch to it. These types of welders are found cheap sometimes and a person then could have a tig that does aluminum and mild steel and stainless!!!!

its possible but I believe you will be limited to lift arc DC. The machine will lack a high frequency generator that is needed for HF arc starts as well as maintaining the arc when AC welding without squarewave technology. I believe you can add a high frequency box to some machines. You will also probably not have a foot pedal to control the amperage that you are welding with, this also I believe can be added to some machines. You will have to do some reasearch to figure out what stick machine may serve your purposes. I kinda like the idea of the alternator driven tig rig that is linked earlier in this thread.
I just thought of this a few hours ago and now I can't seem to get it out of my head so sorry guys
There is an empty 75 or 80 cuft helium tank left behind from a tenant that we evicted about a month ago so I am wondering, is it possible to trade it in for an argon tank and just pay to have it filled? A spare argon tank would be great! Does anybody have any experiance in doing this?

We have a Hypertherm, Get a 220 or 240 version the 110s are ***** and like someone else said if you think the 3/8 version is enough get the 1/2" or 1" cause the last thing you want is to be sitting there all day cutting stuff out which I have done in the past

Hey, we have something in common
GOod stuff, Ive cut 1/2" before. Not pretty, but its better than waiting for a saw to hog its way through it.
1/4" is beautiful

Hmm....I cant think of anyone I personaly did piping for in your area. I usually stick to the locals.
As for my expeirence, I am a machinist/HASS opperater by trade and I have been welding for about 2 years. Just got into Tig about 10 months ago, just got a Miller 180SD about 1 month ago.
Like i stated in porevious posts i need to get a camera to show some of my designs and stuff.
If you got the JET band saw i am sure it comes with a chart of speeds for what metals to cut it at. We have one at work that we run at 800rpm for bar stock. I would almost look into getting another blade, usualy the ones that they come with are a general type, get one that will be more along the lines of what you are gona be cutting, ie: SS, mild, aluminum, etc.
