With thoughts like that, nothing would ever get accomplished. As engineers, the two of you will never accomplish any special or different or meaningfull without any unusual ideas. If you dont like the idea, dont participate. Period. You are going to have boring, meaningless lives as engineers.

The newest Mustang Mach-1 engine is a DOHC V8. I'm sure you could hook up some sort of rpm-activated system to simulate VTEC - like maybe a 15hp direct-shot of nitrous oxide - to convince yourself that you've done something worthwhile when, in all actuality, you've done nothing but waste time being the King of Ricer Dreaming.
Seriously. Who the **** budgets this in their head? Are you stupid? I mean seriously...I can already think of several easier ways to go about this and I've considered it for all of five minutes in between laughing my *** off at your posts.
And good luck getting any kind of siamesed B-series engine to fit in a Civic

dude, to come up with an idea is one thing. I am all for outrageous ideas that have a purpose, this doesn't have a purpose, and it's an assanine idea. I would love to see him have the crank made for this thing, let alone have a "block cast", as we all know how cheap it was for DART and other companies to buy the honda casts let alone mate two together, which wouldn't work anyway, for this ridiculous idea. The kid hasn't even designed anything yet, all he is talking is theory, and his theory sucks.

Dont worry there are a few snags he hasnt noticed yet lol. I think the first one is pretty easy to see. Stare at a DOHC honda head for about 3 secs and try to invision it on a v8 block.
Then think about building exhaust manifolds, intake manifolds and TIMING BELTS. It would be easier to impart some honda engineering into an existing v8 engine. It would be more practical, profitable, etc....
of course i wouldnt know how hard it is to flip cams around cuz i'm not insane.

i don't want to sound mean but isn't the hole idea of us driving cheap affordable Honda's that we can fix up for cheap defy the hole purpose of building an extravagant thing like this. i think it would be more fun to buy a Lamborghini.

No, thats a good point, normally. The point of this is that he wants to make something extravagent. He wants to do something creative, different and fun. Whether or not he would be able to pull it off is something completely different. Whether or not its worth it is something also. But, should any of these things stop him from doing it? Of course not.

I too agree that he won't actually do it, I've thought of the same thing, but quickly dismissed the idea, due to the fact that it isnt cost effective, and overall its just a bad idea, unless you have wayy too much money on your hands, in which case, you wouldnt be thinking about messing with hondas. However...just theoretically speaking its certainly possible (drivetrain-wise) to make it work. IF someone was actually going to go thru on something like this, my opinion would be
#1 to use a K-series due to the fact that the timing chain would be much simpler to deal with and make work
and #2 base it off of a northstar dohc v8, which is pretty much exactly what he wants to build minus the vtec of course, if youve ever looked at one disassembled, the heads have some striking similarities, plus theyve already put a good bit of engineering into it, which you could use to your advantage, instead of starting from scratch
its an interesting idea, and if i ever am a millionaire and am not addicted to ferarri's, i might try it

the northstar is an amazing engine. First tune up is like 100,000 miles or something. They do have a pretty advanced head on that engine. Smart thinking.

Youre a moron and an *******. It's just an idea and the route you explained isnt at all what he is looking to do. Actaully, most engineers admire new ideas not look down on them. Granted, this isnt exactly a new idea, but still, an idea none the less. Any idea is better then nothing and he might end up imporving on something that you would never have thought of because you have nothing to add, only subtract and make yourself look like an ***.
Leave him alone to do what he wants, dont try and make him out to be an idiot because you dont know any better. I say good luck. </TD></TR></TABLE> Well thank you my friend. This man knows what he is talking about. I have a sepcial request for the discussion because it is getting pretty big...

Sorry about the caps there. Hey like Revolver said, what if I come across this problem in my design and have to engineer something rather usefull that otherwise might not have been though of... But then there are negative people in the world, I kinda expected a lot more doubters than supporters, BTW thanks Revolver and the guy who wanted to give me a buck if he could eventually drive it and everyone else who has a little ******* faith in THEMSELVES!!

Then don't ask for people's opinions... Some times, people don't agree with the things you say... You have to understand that, and not whine... So if you want people to keep things to yourself then don't say things like this:

Of course I want to do it, I love to have something I built because no one else can have exactly that unless I give it ot them.. It may be a big waste of money, it may not be worth the time.
Note I origionally said I would use the B series head but after further thought the K came to mind. As MajorPayne said it would be easier to mod the timing chain as opposed to a custom belt. No **** it would require custom manifolds, 99% of the car will be custom or some custom variation of a Honda part. None of the negativity here will deminish my drive to achieve greatness. This may not be the path but I will be there. The engineering "students" are wasting their time and money IMO, I will go to school and have several degrees, maybe if I want to. Instead of investing my money and efforts in to a piece of paper right now I'd much rather invest in something a little more usefull.

I know people think it's completely pointless to have a V8 civic. I don't however.. Look at the AEM drag Civic (tube frame obviously) with a NSX powertrain blows to some 1,420 Hp.. I mean imaging that power out of a 3.2L.. They probably have upped the displacement in the engine but still. Now a VTEC 6.0L or 6.2L even a 5.5L or 5.8L.. V8 VTEC? Yes of course. Actually i-VTEC.. Boosted. Believe me everything will come out of the wash at one time or another. I'm sure I will have at least 2 complete re-engineers going sometime in the middle of the project. No big deal, I want the beast to run. It's my true idea of a Honda Frankenstein.. I civic sleeper like no other.. That is my point. Well she wouldn't sleep too well with anything towards WOT.. I have contacts who machine exotic metals so I may actually tear the drivetrain down and beef it up as much as possible. Don't wanna be blowing trannies left and right. Titanium is a beautiful thing. I gotta take some time, trying to draw and type sucks.
VTEC - lower cam profile for fuel economy, higher cam profile for performance
Pushrod V8 (early Chevy/Ford) - one cam profile, your choice of either fuel economy, performance, or something in between
Now if you're building a performance V8, yeah I can see a use for four valves per cylinder... but VTEC? WTF?
It's cute that you want a V8 with VTEC, but there is no point to it. Hell, GM makes a 720hp 572cui crate motor with a 12k mile/12 month warranty and it cost less than your pointless idea would.
There is no honor or pride in making something that will have no demand and costs more than the car it's being put in.

i wouldidnt say that paying for a piec of paper is all you are doing when you go to a school. you get a jumpstart by learning by some of the smartest people in that particular field. and some things you just simply cant teach yourself. and you get to use tools you will never be able to afford and things you would never be able to get your ands on. and there is a reason that people hire people with that piec of paper. its because most likely they know more than some randome person and they know that they have the drive and work ethic to make it through school.
even though i don't believe in youre idea, i have thought of it myself but in a different way. I ve always thought of tube framing a hatch and put a b series engine in the back and one in the front with some kind of shifting mechanism. but i would never have the money to fabricate something like that and if i did i wouldn't be thinking about Honda's. but variations of these type of set up have been done before, i read in Honda tuning mag there was a guy who tube framed a 91 hatch and set up a b series engine in the rear of the car it was a two part proses but i think i missed the second mag for the finished product, anyway the guy said he calculated the power to rate ratio and considering that he eliminated the wheel spin of a front wheel drive car, with 200hp he would easily run 10 sec on the quarter mile, he even tells you how to fab it up yourself step by step, it seemed easy. also this other one I cant confirm so don't laugh but in gran turismo there is a car called an eskudo by Suzuki that runs pikes peak and in the info it gives is that the car has two engines one in the back and one in the front with twin turbos or superchargers i think. that car is the fastest one in the game its insane. I believe this game because all the info on cars I know about, is accurate as it can get. so if youre interested in that way do youre homework. In my opinion that set up would be cheaper better and easier, its more weight but you get 4wd and you even out weight distribution, chain mechanisms, and less fab work.
