Exactly mate- its there just to show you its receiving power.. the EProm bridges are there for 2 PICs, a 16F88 and a 16F877a. The silver thing is an crystal oscillating at 20MHz providing a CPU clock for the 877a..

If i can explain anything else mate, just drop me a PM..

I'm not fully understanding how this is going to work. Is it going to act like a full throttle ignition cut for shifting between gears, as to not lose boost pressure when changing gears; or is it being using on launch control to start off under boost? I don't clearly know what you're trying to achieve here. It almost seems like you're reinventing the wheel or sorts, because companies have systems like Hondata and Motec that offer launch control for boosted vehilces. I'm not sure about the why their full throttle shifts work, though I'd be willing to bet it's pretty close to the same way.

This is actually quite a bit different in principle.

All the systems supported by Hondata .etc require the driver to physically keep the throttle open to maintain boost, for example for launch control. Or in the context of full throttle shift- placing a rev limit so the revs dont increase when the throttle is planted and the clutch is pressed..

My system works by, when you lift off the throttle (and move to the brake and clutch for example), the computer will open the throttle almost wide open again using a link to the drive by wire system. It will tell the ECU to change the MAP to a massively retarded map with much more fuel added the theory being that the combustion now occurs with the exhaust valves open, providing much more exhaust pressure into the turbine.

The second part of the system provides a high idle. Instead of 1k RPM, it will idle at 3k RPM with similar ignition and fuel characteristics. It also has rotational idle which is used to cool the engine down by selectively interrupting fuel to certain cylinders.

Because the ECU will go into overrun mode when you shut the throttle, this will simulate the throttle being wide open so that the ECU continues to follow the map.

On top of all of it is the safety system, preventing it being used if temps arent right .etc

As you can see, the other systems work with the driver holding the throttle open. Mine opens the throttle for you. The idea is to maintain boost not only between shifts but whilst youre taking a corner or simply deccelerating...

My goodness. All I have to say is that my head hurts after reading this thread, and that is a compliment. Lol

P.s. this thread needs to be moved to the build thread section so it can get the attention it deserves!

Thanks for the compliment mate

Im not too fussed about attention.. I personally think the fabrication section is probably best because its not necessarily specific to my car .etc

Ok, I see how you're doing it now. You're basically controlling the "roll on" part of the map with fuel and ignition timing instead of using the throttle to change the load. Pretty smart thinking, just don't forget a safety mode if their is a failure with the system. Being a Mercedes Benz mechanic as well makes me think about what happens if this fails.

Yep thats the plan!

There is a complete bypass mode on it as well as built in safety systems.. It constantly checks EGT, water temperature, engine check light status .etc. The bypass will quickly remove it so it reverts back to standard- completely disconnected..

I know what you mean mate- same on aircraft for me.. Belt n braces!!

I think one big misconception about engineers in general, is that we know a lot of things. I don't think that's the case, but we do know how to find information and figure out things no matter what it is. I've got a cousin that has his masters degree and is a regional Mechanical Engineer for a international company, but he still ask me all the time to show him things with engines and explain how something works. He usually ends up re-explaining it to himself using combustion engine theory.

It's fun sometimes to just sit and watch how a practicing engineer thinks, or at least for me it is.

PS: My name is Troy by the way, I just realized I didn't have it in my signature on here. I put it in my signature on the other forums I'm a member of.

I would tend to agree with you..

On one hand, when i conceived of the anti lag system, i decided to use it for my university dissertation (although i had to talk them into it), what was the point in not doing it as the dissertation- i was actually making it so it was a bonus..

My point is, that, i explained how my anti lag system works in terms of thermodynamics, heat cycles .etc but that doesnt account for real world factors. You can only approximate volumetric efficiency .etc

You will always find that when an engine is tuned and running it may perform better, or indeed not as well as the theory suggests.

I consider myself to be a decent balance between being able to theorise how a system works, and actually build it, and develop it.. To me thats what an engineer is, being able to conceive it and follow through..

I think i was just rambling- sorry

Chris

Ok todays update

Finished the Dynamic Rear Wing control board.. If i keep the chip out, i can patch it to my development board. In this way i can modify the code quicker if it doesnt work.. The test program will simply seek various positions of the actuators. The problem is if the program doesnt work, and the motors dont stop when theyre meant to, theyre so powerful theyll either break themselves or the actuator mechanism..

Also finished the anti lag circuit added the breakout control to set its secondary idle mode.. All thats left is to buy the case and fan for it..

I had to steal a chip from the mirror controller so ive flashed a new one and finished it..

Also put the finishing touches to the TMU, alot of development went into my s2000 speedo converter and it turned out quite a few extra noise reduction components were necessary for the vehicle speed sensor, so ive added them to all my circuits..

Screw it lol- i wasnt going to say anything but im awful at keeping secrets!

Ive decided not to do an S2000 cluster for my own car... Decided to go one better

Im using the revcounter from my original dash (nostalgia) and 2 4.3" Colour LCD screens mounted either side.

A computer will generate the graphics, accept the reverse camera and GPS video inputs, all the sensors of the car .etc as well as speed. Ill be using SVA compliant warning lights around the rev counter to meet MOT requirements..

Just need to wait for it all to come. But the aluminium fascia you can see now will be covered with black bass box carpet (if i can get some off ebay cheap- have to buy a roll for that much DOH), and there will be a 3mm piece of acrylic transparent sheet behind to stop dust getting into the rev counter...

The system that generates the graphics will also generate voice warnings which ive already got ready. Ive also resigned a backup mode in case part of the system fails and i loose the screen or graphics card for the screen with the speedo on. Flicking a switch will move the most critical information, in a simplistic format to the left hand screen..

It doesnt look much now but ive only just started- the hardest bit was butchering the oem cluster.. Ive put a flat ali plate in the back which allows me to bolt everything to a flat stable surface too.. Ive but white LEDs behind the rev counter to illuminate it like the OEM one did, however there is a bit of glare coming through so i need to dim them down a bit- or at least diffuse them..

Lights ON

Lights Off

Oh and now ive tidied up a bit, this is how much storage i need now ive started making stuff for people lol..

BTW- this is actually the last piece of equipment ill be building for this car.. Its all done, and although ive kept it quiet- ive been planning it for a while, i was going to go with an S2000 one but i just want more information available and to do away with all my gauges (accept boost).

Chris, to help with your actuator over run issue, you can put kill switches at each extreme of the actuator's travel. I'd probably use a magnetic reed type and some type of polarity switching attached, so that when it reaches the limit the switch would change the polarity of just one of the inputs on the actuator so to kill the power to it. This is just a suggestion, if you haven't considered it yet.

By the way, since I haven't said it yet, your car is nice and pretty innovative.

Thanks mate- i had considered it. I may as well do it..

The linear pots are actual mixer pots, so there are 2 individual pots built in. The software checks them against each other, if the values dont match, the computer stops the motors and sounds an alarm..

Sounds good, I guess, electronics aren't my strong point. You can also use a current limiting setup, that way if anything ever jams the linkages for any reason they'll shut off as well.

its a good idea mate, something i should look into as the power supply does have limits...

lol, I figured someone might say that. Don't worry, I'm sure a lot of people were thinking the same thing. About ten years ago I might have said the very same thing.

Mine tell me that all the time, or she'll just say I really don't care.

I guess I would do the same if I tried to understand a conversion between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

That sounds about right mate..

To be honest though i couldnt have done this build without my wife and to be honest its caused some big arguements in the past, but shes stuck with me and continued to support me through it..

Ive been working on the final electronics project for the car. As some may know, the Honda distributor is mounted on the cam and is therefore subject to inaccuracies introduced through the cam belt.

Having just found out that my distributor is not working properly and i would need to source a new one, ive decided to be a bit more adventureous. I have designed a crank trigger system, similar to that of more sophisticated EMS's.

This uses a 36/1 trigger wheel mounted to the crank pulley. As well as a sensor mounted on the cam gear (this will confirm which of the 2 crank rotations is TDC). This will also roll up my external coil controller, giving the honda ecu a fully distributorless ignition..

Sorry mate, I took it off.. I wasnt in the mood for the blatent "hater" that chirped up..

I posted on that forum because i thought other like minded people might be interested in reading it.. Whoever it was that decided to voice his "opinion" showed it wasnt the forum for me...

Firstly if you disagree with someone, say so and have a discussion.. Maybe youll change your mind.
Secondly he knows nothing about anything, and if memory serves he had 35k posts, not interested...

I prefer this forum as if people on here disagree, you discuss it. There could be reasons for certain things- there is no need to try and make someone look like a dick!

Anyway! Ive been writing the software for the dash displays. Was at it for 4 hours last night. Damn its complicated, the graphics adapter takes quite alot of coding to get it to do even the simplest things..

However, i think ive written some awesome little macros that should take out not only memory problems, but efficiency and allow me to program things in simple decimal commands... Woot (probably means nothing to most people lol)

^This is absolute proof that you're a computer nerd. lol And you're right, some people probably slapped there head and are saying to themselves "what a geek."

It's all good though, I'm sure we all do something with cars that makes us look nerdy to other people. I know I do.
