Default Tranny Case

I'm at the end stages of puting my ITR tranny back toghter. But I'm having problems putting the outer tranny case back on, it doesn't even get to the point of where you need to expand the span ring, its about 1/2" above that. What other things is there to check besides?

you got blocks of wood under the clutch housing to keep the mainshaft from hitting?

Also make sure that you have the washer with the little tang lined up at the top of the case.

That did the trick, thanks.

Also I got a little problem. My tranny is now fully reassembled after changing out bearings, syncros, syncro sleeves, shift forks, and a 4.7 FD. However I can't really shift with the shift linkage (tranny is not on engine yet). Is this because there is no oil in it yet? Because when the case was open, the syncro sleeves and shift forks shifted smoothly.

You should be able to shift it. We do it on the bench by hand with a small punch through the small hole in the end of it. Try it that way

you should also be able to shift it before you even put the case on. just make sure to dunk the parts in clean fluid so there is some lubrication while reinstalling the parts and you should be able to shift it by hand on the bench.

.....what these guys said.

who did the rebuild?

remember that certain syncro sleeves and hubs only fit ONE WAY against one another... if you put them in wrong, it may not shift at all.

i'm not sure about the B trans, but...

If that were the case on the D trans, 3-4 sleeve upside would lock it into 4th gear.

Okay here is a recap:

With the tranny case open, I can shift gears.

With it closed, I can not. Shifter lever goes side to side in nuetral, but not into any gear.

I recently put a hole in one, because a shaft wasn't lined up correctly. ******* aluminum.

Seems like something isn't lined up right...

something isnt lining up or installed correctly. can you get the case nearly all the way on while its sitting on the bench? If you cant get the gap down to around 1/8 inch without much effort, something isnt lining up right. and if you cant pop the snap ring in place just by flipping it over, its definitely not lining up correctly.

Everything was lubricated but...

I mounted the tranny back on, put oil into it and it still wouldn't shift. Kept the car on for 5 mins, tryed forcing the shifter into a gear and it magically started shifting. It works.

Onto the next problem, has anyone seen reverse not working because of bad shift linkage? Does the stabilizer bar actually have any function with switching gears?

my very first hybrid trans sounded like that. I couldn't turn the mainshaft and I was pissed and frustrated. I said "**** IT" and put the trans on and it worked with no problems.

Now adays I'd never do that again, but nevertheless it worked lol

err.... it's tough to tell... the little ball on the shaft should fit in that little fork on the selector linkage piece... let me see if i can dig up a pic of mine..... make sure that shaft is all the way down.

Here's how mine looked when I rebuilt it:

Take a pic like this and let me see it:

While you have the case open, let's see pics of the mainshaft and countershaft along with all the gears... it's possible you missed something.....
