Default Grinding noise when clutch is released

I drive a 98 Honda Civic. It makes a grinding noise when the clutch is released in any gear and 3rd is the loudest. It even makes the noise it neutral when the clutch is released. The engine and tranny have 150k on it and the body has 223k. What would make that noise? and how hard of a job would it be?

By released do you mean pedal is up or pressed down?

Bad transmission main bearing is the general cause.

If you are unable to remove your transmission, crack it open, and replace main bearings, then your best option may be to shop for a used/rebuilt replacement transmission.

you probably got some time before the bearing goes completely out. I've read some people driving 2 years with a bad throw out bearing. mine is making noise too.

It's not the throw out bearing. That makes noise with the clutch pedal depressed. The input shaft bearing makes noise with the clutch pedal released.

Basically, the trans needs a bearing and seal kit rebuild or swapped out, as stated already.
