Default Copper spray or NO copper spray

Just wanted to get some opinions as I put my head back on tomorrow. I have always used copper spray and have had great luck with it. But I have been listening to other guys and they seem to not like it too much.

My gasket didnt blow due to the copper spray, but like I said I just want to hear some others opinions.

car is a 92 cx, benson sleved gsr, S372R turbo

from what I learned in school the times you are NOT supposed to use it was iron block/aluminum head motors due to the expansion and contraction rates being different and the MLS not being able to shift in 2 different directions. and that it was ok to use on similar metallic block/head combos

input is great guys.

thanks

We use copper spray. It does not hurt. Especially when you do not know for a FACT both surfaces are truely flat

I don't use it and never had a head gasket go. But other people swear by it, others hate it. It's a tough call.

ya i used copper spray on my last head gasket, used about 3 very light layers, worked awsome for me,

the only thing that was wierd after was there were bits of copper in the coolant after, so i flushed the radiator.

I used copper spray when I installed the head twice and had no problems. The only complaint (not me personally) I heard with copper spray is cleaning it off everytime you remove the head. Even so, I removed the head to replace my valves once and still had no problems when I reinstalled another sprayed head gasket.

I've never used it on any of the headgasket changes I've done at work and I've not had one fail on me yet.
If your method ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm with you.^^^

A head gasket is made not to leak anything, why add to it.... You should be able to put the gasket on, on be done. I have done many headgaskets at work, never put any cooper stuff on, seen it at school, but never used it.

So, If your using a good headgasket, I see no reason for it...

My pistons are +.016 out of the bore which I was certain would give me headgasket issues, running a copper sprayed cometic .065" gasket and no issues so far with about 12 dyno pulls, 3 track passes and 3k miles of hard 20+psi street use in the mid 500whp range on Ethanol.

I'm sure when you buy a comrtic head gasket, it says not to spray anything on it.
I never used it till my head gasket went on me. Now im machining both head & block and ill be using copper spray with a cometic head gasket.

I've never used it. I've always had the head and block checked for flatness.

Personally I'd not use it. Its a bitch to clean off if you do pull the head for anything. Just make sure the surfaces are nice and flat.

Well think about it - you spray the whole gasket, and part of it is in the coolant stream. So...that much washed off the unclamped section into the coolant.

The Hylomar-like black stuff is supposed to make up for that last little bit of roughness, which Honda specs to be almost, but not exactly, zero. The copper stuff just goes a little beyond that; I've never seen any evidence that it hurts in any way - besides requiring a tad more cleaning after a tear-down.

well I tossed the head back on today and got the turbo manifold on and all my lines a stuff back on, I went with the old faithful and tossed on a little bit of copper spray, i guess i just cant let old habits die.

I really do appreciate everyones in put and would like to see what anyone else has to say incase I ever have to do it again, hopefully not for a little while

ive done both methods a million times. its not going to make a difference. if the gasket is going to leak or blow its going to do it with or with out the copper spray.

i dont use it on my motor. 50+psi
