Default plans to work over my STD hatch

OK so I'm tired of driving my car and not modding it. I can't take it any more. Since all my experience has been with vws, however, I'm at a loss. I have a 91 STD hatch which I guess is a D15b1? Whatever it is, its slow.

Purpose: build a fairly quick, lightweight car I can use for auto-x but still holds its own on the street. Eventually when I get another car it might get stripped out for strict auto-x use, but right now its still a daily driver.

Ideas: I think I'd rather go with a high-compression motor (11-12:1) over boost, since I'm still a college student and don't have a ton of money to spend. I feel like that would be cheaper (I may be way wrong). The more crap I can dig out of a junkyard the better. I do pretty much all my own work (except for stuff that needs specal equipment, etc obviously).

So, I'm pretty much starting from scratch, knowledge-wise. All these letters and numbers mean nothing to me, but I'm a fast learner. I'm definitely open to all ideas and suggestions, but do me a favor and explain what the stuff is and where I can get it (i.e. use a zc motor with an a6 head, what year/model cars did these come from and what are their specs? (I have no idea if those items make sense together)).

So, anyone who wants to help me out, awesome. I'll try to start picking up on this stuff soon, and enter the Honda tuning world (never thought I'd hear myself saying that )

TIA

i was in your shoes when i started out. i was like d16 what b16 huh? i killed the search botton for a good year before my first post. this forum has a ton of info stored. so read a lot there is a lot of good magizines out there too i used to like honda tunning a lot. if you let us know what you have to spend or plan on spending it would help us to help you. the std is the lightest ef hb out there so its a good starting point. but it also has some down falls like the small hubs, dual point fuel injection and stuff like that.

I'm not sure how much I plan on spending, since its not going to be al at once, but over a period of time. What I'd like to do is get another motor and put it on a stand and work it over, then eventually when its done drop it into the car. I may have a little better idea than I first indicated, I used to help a buddy work on his integra quite a bit. But yeah, the dpfi - gotta go. Having only 2 injectors just seems strange. Thanks for the links, I havea lot of reading to do.

Whats the potential power difference between the dohc and the sohc ZC? Is the dohc vtec?

so the D16 is not vtec, neither of them, from what I gather. I know its more expensive, but what about the B16 from HMO? they have several and I'm not sure which one I would have to use, but it looks like I could get it for like 1500 with the tranny, shift linkage and all that fun stuff.

this one?

Ok, I think thats the one I linked to.

Out of curiosity, whats the weight difference between the b16 and the b18? How else are they different (besides displacement obviously)

well if you want to build a motor i would not do it to a dseries i think that wokould be stupid, if i where you and wanted all motor i would either get a junk yard b18 (the motor from a integra) or order a b16 from hmotors .
good luck with your car and welcome to "the family"

b16 has higher rev limit, more hp, less tq, vtec, tighter geared tranny.

weight difference should be very small. they all have the same bore, the displacement difference comes from stroke length/rod length

So, directed at anyone who's done a B16, whats the approx. cost to get it in the car and driveable? So far, as I understand, I've got the motor - from HMO, comes with a bunch of other stuff too:

- Motor
- Cable Tranny (Y1, S1, J1)
- ECU (PR3, PW0)
- Axles with Half Shaft
- Shift Linkage*
- Stock Motor Mounts*
- Alternator
- Starter
- Clutch
- Flywheel
- Intake Manifold
- Exhaust Manifold
- Fuel Rail
- Injectors
- Distributor
- Engine Harness
- Comes With All Sensors Needed
- LSD Tranny (Optional +$300)

So that there is $1500 plus shipping, then I'll need the mount kit, $400 through hasport, probably 300-500 bucks as an oh **** fund just in case. What else am I missing? And so far does this sound like a reasonable estimate?
