The tranny and final drive use the same fluid.
2.2-2.3 qts. of MTF is all you will need for a flush.
If the tranny was "empty"... ~3 qts. may be required.

A clutch type LSD (not gear type) uses a additive (mixed with the normal fluid) to help with wear on the LSD discs.
If you have a ITR (or other gear type LSD) LSD the additive is not needed.

I talked to a guy in the Acura parts department at a dealership (so take it for what it's worth..) and he told me that it wasn't necessary to use the Honda MTF. He said that the mechanics there told him you could use 5w30 motor oil in the tranny. I'm a little sceptical of this so I think I'll splurge for the Honda stuff, but is this true?

I believe this question came up because of the LSD, and the prospect that it might not be stock.
For those with a stock ITR transmission, if you're interested in what transmission fluid folks are using, you might check out previous topics like these:

so of course I put the stuff in my transmission, and so far have been very pleased. Smooth shifts, quiet operation, and the annoying refusal to go into reverse my transmission (and most honda transmissions I have driven) have is all but gone.
I guess my point is don't believe everything you search, and of course, that I recommend redline MTL.
if it helps, I switched to redline MTL in my R about a month ago and mine is doing just fine, too. I agree... don't believe everything you read on the boards.
