Honda recommends Honda MTF. Engine oil can be used only in emergency. I heard that it will shift less smoothly with regular engine oil.

you should change it out with honda mtf asap. it's the best stuff you can use for your tranny, it's not regular motor oil. motor oil causes premature wearing in trannies.
Where did you find the info that motor oil can cause premature wear?
Don't use regular motor oil As many others have said, Honda MTF is great for these trannies. Interestingly enough, Honda Techline suggests that for a gearbox that's giving even the slightest of trouble, put in GM Synchromesh fluid so that's what I run in my car. Good stuff that!
Hey I did a finger viscosity test and found that the Honda MTF is alot lighter and smoother than regular 10-30 heck its about the same as a 5-30w
I might change it but I'm friggen lazy

I have a friend of mine who used to work at a Honda dealership, and he told me that they just use 5W30 oil for the tranny.
BTW I use the Honda MTF.

Does the tranny come with the honda MTF as it's lubricant or is it an additional accessary that you have to buy. Plus is it difficult to change the transmission fluid? Thanks

what you mean what it come with?...if you are buying a new car then yes it does use MTF in the tranny (if its a 5spd)....to change the fluid you will need a 17mm socket or flat, 3/8" and about 2-2 1/2 of MTF.....*** well as about thumb sized 2 ft. long hose to pour it into the tranny...

It seems that a lot of people have had negative expreience with Redline MTL however it's completely the opposite for me. I used to run Honda MTL and the tranny was anything but smooth.. this was will NEW MTL, not 80,000 mile old stuff or anything
After switching to Redline MTL the tranny was a hell of a lot smoother.. but this doesn't seem to be the case for most people? Of course, a friends tranny just got rebuilt by acura and it's still getting stuck in reverse.. I'm really losing faith in Honda quick... not that I had that much faith in them to begin with
