Horriable sound when clutch is enguaged....97 honda civic
quick question......when i let go of my clutch pedel, to enguage the clutch, (note i can only hear the noise at idle, but i have notice that my civic is much louder when i drive it) I hear a loud noise the whole time. It is hard to explain the sound but it is something like a higher pitch metal grinding noise, almost like the sound of bearings rolling but not in a smooth motion. I know the sound is from the clutch area because when i push the clutch pedel in....the sound goes away completly. I am sure that i will have to put a new clutch in ....but i was wondering if anyone had any tips on what the problem could be. NOTE: The clutch seem to be enguaging and disenguaging with no problems.

sounds like the input shaft bearing is whining. if so the clutch is ok, you'll have to drop the tranny, open it up and replace the bearing.

is that the same as the release bearing that my service manual refers too? Also can it be purchased by itself? How much usually on the cost?

no the release bearing is outside of the trans, but it's inbetween the trans and block. http://www.slhondaparts.com check out the MT clutch housing section. the input shaft bearing is inside the trans.
it may not be the bearing, that's just what it sounds like based on your description and what i've heard before.
