Help... my car sounds like a wrx/chopper
Hi there, I have a Jdm b16a in a 1994 honda civic coupe. Recently, I swapped in a Megan 4-1 header. While taking the car for a test drive, it sounded like a wrx. You know, the "bup bup bup" sound. It gets worst when I'm accelerating. This is my first time owning any sort of header, so I don't know if this type of sound is normal or not??? I tried searching and some people are saying exhaust leaks, injectors, plugs, or wires. But honestly, I've changed my plugs, wires, cap and rotor less than 3,000 miles ago. And I did not have any exhaust leak before putting on the header. I'm running a Tsudo catback system if it'll explain anything. Oh, and my catalytic converter is totally gutted. I didn't do it intentionally. I just took it off one day and looked through it because I was hearing all this rattling sound, and it was bare, no honey comb shape inside of it at all. So I'm thinking it's probably because there's no restriction in the exhaust, that's why it sounds like an wrx??? WEll, I'm stumped at the moment. I haven't had time to further diagnose because of work, but I'll get on it tomorrow morning. But does any one have any suggestions on what I should look for? Or could it be my muffler? Or possibly a defective header? Anyways, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A friend of mine had the exact set up as you do in his 93 hatch and it sounded jus like a wrx too. It was weird cuz before he put on his header and exhaust it sounded normal. But after it was put on it was subaru time. I think thats just what it sounds like, i dont know though

thats normal, i put in a megan 4-1 on my jdm b18c, and it does the same thing. its really not that bad though, its just kinda blub blub blup at idle, and it starts to sound normal as rpms go up. yours sounds like its a little different though. can u post a sound clip?

No, no loss in power at all. The car runs fine and idles fine. The sound gets really irritating because it's so loud inside the car. I don't hear the subaru sound outside the car. I had my brother drive it down the street and it sound normal from the outside, but then again, I want to get rid of the annoying sound. Funny thing is my friend told me I have a boxer engine as well, lol. It's pretty embarassing driving on the streets because I think people would be able to hear it, I duno. but I have a friend with a type R and he has DC 4-1 header, and his doesn't sound anything like a WRX. but then again, he has a stock catalytic converter on his car, so I think that's what I need in order to get rid of the annoying sound??? But does anyone here, who is using the same header as I am and is running a test pipe/straight pipe and is getting the same sound? I need to narrow it down to what's causing this sound, having no cat or is it my muffler? I'll probably just throw on the stock muffler tomorrow and see if there's any change in tone. I'll update once I find the source of the problem. Thanks to all who replied.

Did you use a gasket on the header? Check where the header bolts up to your gutted catalytic converter, if nothing is obvious.. get a spray bottle full of water.. while the header isn't really hot and spray around areas it could be leaking.

No mine is definetly runnin on 3 due to fouled plugs, i just got some denso coppers like 3 weeks ago and they are fouled already. Btw on a side note i do have a exhaust leak, but it never cause it to sound like this before so thats why i told you about it.

Re: (ekcivic9)
Hi guys, well I put back my stock muffler this morning, and wow, what a difference in sound. The WRX sound is no more. But the car does feel a bit laggy compare to before because of the restrictive muffler. Oh well, I'll just stick with it for now until my friend lends me his type r muffler. About the sound clip... I was going to get it recorded, but my sister lost the battery to her digital camera, so I didn't have anything to record it with. But once I find that darn battery, I'll put back the tsudo muffler and record the sound because I know you're just dying to hear it, lol Ok, thanks to all who replied. Happy New Years!!!
