Default Advice on possible mini-me. z6 or y8?

I've done some research, and I've decided that I want to do a mini-me swap in my 92 DX hatch. I know I want either a z6 or a y8, but I can't really decide. I'll probably go with whichever one I can get cheaper. Although, I don't want to be cheap about it. I read somewhere, I think it was a post on here, that said it cost them around $550.

What are the pros and cons of each one? Which do you prefer? Anything about them really. Please, and thank you.

Just get the head from the generation of car you have. Make it simple on yourself. I'm not going to bother going into pros and cons. That's what your research is supposed to tell you.

pros are VTAK baby!
cons are you could probably swap in a whole D16 for about the same price/hassle, but yeah you will easily be at $550 if you are smart and do new t belt, water pump, oil pump and after head gasket, ECU, and assorted other odds and ends. You should probably look at an EX/Si tranny as well

Honestly I'd just get a Y8 or Z6 swap for that price. You might even be able to find a swap with transmission for that price or a little more. I wouldn't even bother with the B7 transmission.

This is the best advice. The differences are marginal at best and not worth fighting to convert between one or the other. This way you wont have to rewire the distributor and deal with all the misc bullsh*t that comes with mis-matched builds.

Just did a mini me to my civic and compared to other things I have done to a civic it was fairly simple because I used all the same parts from my generation. Better yet I used all obd2B parts on my obd2B civic was essentially plug and play.

^This, I've only seen a handful of "mini me" swaps actually run correctly, all the others are horror stories and the owner ends up swapping motors in the end due to chasing problems for months.

Your $500 dollars is probably having it installed. You can get a cheap head anywhere. for much less.

I recently helped a friend put a mini-me together for his daily EK...i think he paid $150 for the complete head and another $50 for the HG. I think $500 is a high estimate, unless someone is installing it for you

That's what I meant. A shop install. That's the only way I can see it being that much.

I paid 150$ for a high mileage engine block. had to take it all apart. The same guy sold me the ECU for 50$. Wire harness was 60$ Then it was 286$ for a complete top end gasket kit. I have countless hours into the whole process. 10 bucks for copper paste, I cant use my DX harness for anything I cut it up to make the o2 sensors work. Lets not forget the timing belt and water pump $$$$ . As well my old DX intake is usless or I have to cut it up and get a new rubber coupler. May as well change the engine oil and the filter after you drive it a few kilometres.... 30$$ Coolant? you going to reuse that old stuff or put new in?

All said and done Im into it for almost 1000 bucks and this guys here below says it best...

Head Swaps - Mini-Me - I'm only adding links to head swaps to this section that are complete from start to finish and are proven to work. No weird Frankenstein combos will be listed unless it's a link to a COMPLETE guide.

IMO these were a fad that never died out. When I first heard about these they were touted to net you SIGNIFICANT horsepower if you were stuck with anything but a Z6 or a Y8. In reality the gains are really not worth writing home about and because people NEVER want to do these the right way you will see the forums cluttered with these guys begging for help when their head swap goes wrong. Even when you do them the right way you'll be disappointed.

im pissed if I would of just waited 1 more paycheque I could of just done an LS swap and been far happier.

If you do buy a head make sure you know how to check for bent valves whether the head is on the block or off. Chances are you will get one with bent valvesf 8 I have bought and reassured that they were good to go only 1 was so.
If I had a choice I would get Y8 head for the simple reason that a dizzy for it is easy to find and you already have.
I did a y8 head on an a6 block and ran phenomenal
