Default D16Y7 improvements

Hi All,

So I'm a nub when it comes to Honda, but learning slowly since I got my '97 DX Coupe (120k) as I tore it down to paint it right after getting it and have been dealing with various issues that should have been dealt with by the previous owner who was a complete idiot

Anyways, I'm looking for what power I can get out of it, as I drive primarily on Interstate (~80MPH avg), and sometimes have difficulty picking up speed in the 70-80MPH range without going to 5k rpm.

From what I can tell most people would suggest swapping for a B series block, but I don't really want to do anything that drastic- I have an AEM Short Ram intake en route which I plan to build a basic box for, replaced plugs/wires, and fuel filter (which was long overdue since replacing the gas tank this fall)

So next step, y8 head? or anything else ~minor that'll help with higher speed pep?

(Also, its an A/T...)

Thanks in advance HT

nothing you do short of boost will add any noticeable hp gains. not to mention you're hindered by that auto.

There really isn't much that will help that is simple. Boost is about the only way of getting noticeable power from the y7. My dd is a lx with same engine and a manual trans, and 80mph seems to be a good cruise speed for interstate, but acceleration is definitely lacking at.that speed without dropping a gear or two.

You have two options:

Swap to a 5 speed and boost
Swap to a 5 speed and a different motor

Anything else you try to do such as intake and exhaust will be a waste of money.

Modify a Y7? Nothing to be done except make it look pretty. You bought the wrong car.

Exciting!! :D

OP - as others have said, you won't really get much if anything from modifying the y7/auto.

So any suggestions that people give you to add an Intake/Header/Exhaust to that engine will just be their poor attempt at getting you to waste your money.

i have never driven a d16y7 until this weekend and i was amazed by how sluggish and powerless the d16 is, i never knew such engine exists that was so terrible...

So i now can say i honestly feel bad for non vtec d series owners...

Having owned over 7 EKs 5 of them which have d16y7 yes they are torque-less ... however i think if you get an intake and exhaust it will help you with your problem. Remember they have very little torque, but the gas mileage reflects that greatly .

Thanks guys, I think I'll continue stripping the interior and making minor upgrades as stuff breaks (Suspension) until I get a newer one down the road, But maybe one day it will be given new life with a different motor/trans/turbo because it is pretty fun to drive still, the body is totally rust free, and I've already invested too much into it to ever get rid of it. (at 133k I can probably get another 170 out of it)

Next after Short Ram intake arrives is a Windshield (15" crack i got 2 weeks after inspection in November) and then Tint.
