This is what I'm working with:







So I put the axle socket over the wheel hub and hammer, but it doesn't move at all.

I know there's a clip in there, but it holds the bearing in, not the hub, right? So I should be find hammering out the hub first, then taking the clip out, then using my press kit for getting the bearing out. It just will not move at all though.

Does this mean I need to throw $200 at a press now? Because the cost of this is just skyrocketing right now. I need a new ball joint, new CV axle after the last one broke, a new wheel (I had to saw through it with an angle grinder), and all these tools...

 

Or you could take it to a machine shop, and pay them to press it for you. Ya know, do the job the right way once.

 

How much do you think they'd charge for something like that?

 

20 to 100 depending on who does the work.

 

Bring them the replacement bearing, it's a quick and easy press out/press in, shouldn't be more than $60.

 

Sounds reasonable... I watched this video from Chrisfix on doing wheel bearings and hubs, and only after I got this far did I notice there was a cut where it looks really easy for him to hammer out the wheel hub:

Hell, maybe I should just do the other side while I'm at it. CV Axle, lower ball joint, etc.

I'm doing it this way because I'm low on money, quit my job, and need this working quickly.

 

If the wheel bearing was never replaced before by you during the time you had it than you can be damn sure its going to be a rocky road, like offroad climbing a 80 degree with only a 2wd.

 

I see what you mean. I doubt it was knowing the last guy. Anything that took that much effort was never done (so neglected basically), and anything that took no effort was done poorly.

I think I'll just get the press, cause I'll be doing this with the other side and I'm sure my dad could use it or something once I'm done with it. If not, just resell it on Ebay or something, right?
Besides my Go to Hell fund is good enough for this stuff. I just don't like digging into it too much.

 

Harbor Freight has some cheap hand presses, if you want to buy your own.

 

I still think it's easier to pay the machine shop for some of these jobs. Not only is it the press but it's all the precise sized receiver cups and press adapters etc.

Just like for the ball joints, just the c-clamp basic ball joint set won't work, you then need the Honda adapters etc.

Here you will also need to figure out or find a proper cradle to hold the knuckle once you have the proper sized press adapter.

Honestly, unless you are going to make a living of pressing out wheel bearings and bushings, I don't feel the investment into all the tools and adapters as being fruitful. You shouldn't come anywhere near the cost to have the job done a few times at a machine shop as it will for all the hardware to DIY.

Just my opinion which doesn't apply to desire or want. If you want to get your own stuff, go for it, please just be aware, the press alone likely isn't everything you need for the job.
