third gear issue official discussion thread (3rd, grind, etc)

TSB from honda released 4/12/08 regarding this freakin' issue. my personal experience with this fix is toward the bottom of page 3. long story short: the fix is legit, and my car is fine now.

TSB HERE

I have made this to compile what has been said so far and to encourage any and all info to be in ONE thread. Alot of users continue to start threads rehashing the same or similar information, same questions, etc. relative to this situation.

I will use my best judgement to direct all users who start individual threads regarding this issue to this thread, and most likely will lock all threads made in this sub-forum related to this subject. Any and all discussion about it can take place in here.

Let's hope this makes for an easier navigation and less reposting of info about the same 'ol thing.

bear with me as i compile info. the initial list in this post, which is the first post in this thread, will be added and ordered newest to oldest, top to bottom.

Nice, finally an answer from Honda about this annoying issue.

How official is this TSB? If I take my car to honda for my 15000 mile check up, will the replace 3rd gear if I tell them i'm having issues?

2008fijibluesi 04-13-2008 11:16 AM

This is BS! My car falls outside the TSB VIN# by 15 cars. Granted, my 3rd gear doesn't grind nearly as often as some have described, but it does grind, and I deserve a fix.

Re: (2008fijibluesi)

get in touch with your area rep. i'd be willing to bet you have some recourse. good luck!

will they change the mtf during this warranty work?

They have to drain the MTF when they pull the transmission out. So yes they will change the fluid when they install the tranny back in the car.

With the problems some people have been having it would be smart to go ahead and upgrade the clutch while it´s apart IMO.

Are they using new part numbers? I have read where people had this service done (before TSB) and the problem returned.

Re: third gear issue official discussion thread (builthatch)

Two questions:

1. Does printing this TSB guarantee that Honda will do this work for me, assuming I fall within the affected range, or will Honda say "wait until we notify you"?

2. Has anyone had this particular service done, and if so, what were your results? Please let us know as the results come in.

knaira112387 04-13-2008 11:46 PM

I hope my dealership offers this because im in need of wanting to get this done.. anyways.. im in seattle, wa and i want to know if i present this as what L-Dawg says they cannot deny this TSB was not out yet and that they havent heared of such a thing.

FINALLY!!

So do all Honda dealerships receive this TSB at or around the same time? Or does it take a while to filter to all the dealerships in the country?

Should I wait for a call/letter from my dealer or just take my car in?

IT GUY 04-14-2008 09:54 AM

Re: (RICO_)

This is a TSB not a recall. You only get letters for recalls. That means if you come in to a dealership with these symptoms, Honda has outlined a course of action (TSB)

Great News though https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif

I'm interested to see how people's experiences go getting this repaired.

builthatch 04-14-2008 10:18 AM

Re: (IT GUY)

at the end of Feb, i took my car in to Rossi Honda in Vineland, NJ for this issue. I detailed it in one of the threads (here- https://honda-tech.com/zero...22175). The service writer and tech were able to dupe the problem. He said a fix was in the works and i would be alerted when it came about.

Today i got a call from the service writer Jason that the parts detailed in the TSB have been ordered and should be here Thursday. He's always been a man of his word, so i'm not surprised when he told me that everything was in line to get repaired.

Re: (builthatch)

I already had mine done. I had to make sure with the tech that we replaced what Honda had listed (which we did). Its been just over 2 months and not a single issue with 2nd or 3rd. Great to see that Honda finally admitted the problem. I kept telling my service writers at my dealership about it. We have prolly fixed 4-5 before the TSB, im sure Honda finally said "Well shit...theres alot of being fixed by dealers, maybe we should look into this?"

Demonis 04-14-2008 12:08 PM

If I'm not mistaken, don't they still have to replicate the problem to fix this?

chiquito 04-14-2008 01:42 PM

Re: (Demonis)

do you have to be under warrantee for this to be free? i'm at 45,000 miles and not under warrantee any more.

builthatch 04-14-2008 04:16 PM

Re: (chiquito)

TSB up top rehosted successfully!

and chiquito, check out the bottom left of the last page of the TSB for info regarding your type of situation.

chiquito 04-14-2008 04:31 PM

Re: (builthatch)

thank you builthatch. they did this for me out of warrantee with the "goodwill" thing for free ...for changing of manual transmission fluid.

even though there wasn't an official bulletin. just a memo at the time.

being that far out of warranty its gonna be a tough call. If you were a couple hundred/thousand out than it wouldnt be a big deal.. Its really up to your service manager and Dist svc mgr. Good luck!

Re: (chiquito)

You all know the powertrain limited warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles? (63,000 miles for 06-07 Civics?)
Open your glovebox and find this.

On does everyone get a free rebuild? No.

DIAGNOSIS
Drive a known-good vehicle under the same conditions
as the customer’s complaint, and compare the shift
quality. If the customer’s vehicle has noticeable shift
quality problems, replace the 3rd gear set.

NOTE: It is not uncommon for there to be some
resistance or notchiness when shifting into third gear.

Do they have to get it to grind/popout? No. They have to compare with a known-good vehicle, and look for a "noticeable shift quality problem."

doh! i paid more attention to the out of warranty part than the mileage for chiquito.

good call ; )

and yeah, the TSB is only half the battle. getting the dealership to dupe the issue can sometimes be tough. my car does it no matter what and is very easy to get it to not fully engage, so they didn't have much trouble replicating the problem i've been complaining about forever.

then you're beat, unfortunately.

the only way to get around that is if you really really know a tech or service writer well, and they trust you fully. their credibility and maybe job is at stake, so they probably would only do it for someone they really trust, and know for a fact is having the issue but they just can't replicate it. otherwise, they have to replicate it. it's policy.

no prob. hate to sound negative, but that's my read on it.

also, i gotta note- if it happens occasionally, then you are very lucky because there are some of us who have cars that do it incessantly, like mine. it freakin' sucks and is a true pain in the ass to drive this thing. i think that the design has a flaw no matter what, and anything that honda comes up with will really be bandaids to a flawed design. but, hopefully, this bandaid will be better than nothing because right now my car is barely manageable. i hate it.
