The Official EF Discussion Thread
Tall Kyle! (Cue applause from the audience a la cheers) wow it's been a while, nice ride man, glad to see it still in circulation!
Couple of weeks back I went to a local smog shop to get a pre-test, guy said my numbers looked like I was running a hollow cat, at first I thought he was f'ing with me, it was a fairly new, but cheap *** cat.
I replaced it with a magnaflow today, it turned out I melted the old one. Apparently my car is running real rich...wtf?
Oh and the previous owner told me I have a cam, but not sure if it's a re grind, a Jdm one or aftermarket - it was from way back in the day when we passed parts along from friend to friend and before there were a lot of choices in the aftermarket, and considering how old it is, most likely not aftermarket

Damn sp33, that looks soon clean, I am very jealous of the and action.
I picked up a spare pm6 ecu and stock d16a6 cam. With having had the engine rebuilt not too long ago, a new dizzy, new air box, new O2 sensor, new plug wires and plugs - I'm not sure what would cause the rich condition.
I looked at my old ecu and it looked like someone had pulled the carpet back previously, but the ecu looked brand new and had the right born on date of 91.
I swapped in the ecu (alt) I got today and the car took a second to start up and immediately gave me a code 8 and check light. I swapped the orig back in and no code as well as started right up. The alt ecu is an earlier version, with a born on date of 88 tho.
Any ideas? Injector issue? I just don't want to melt my new cat too, lol.
UPDATE - I replaced my PCV valve, man was it gummed up and not doing anything. I checked the VC nipple to the intake and it was pushing air and I assume oil into the intake. Swapped in the new PCV, and now getting proper suction at the VC nipple. Man, a $3 part. Lol I should have changed it sooner. Side note, I did break it upon initial installation, and had to drive out to find another, it was the last in stock at my local place, lol.
I still think it's part of the larger issue, which may be that mystery cam. Can blow by cause melted cat? I know you can run rich with cam overlap from what I've read. Also, since I did melt my cat, do I need to replace the O2 sensor?

Whats the position of the distributor?
Mine is midway on the swing arch on both of my EF's that are running?
Also what distributor you running? Is the ignitor module putting out correct volts.
88 ECU is for 88's. I think 91 had an extra sensor on the motor as well as different wiring.

No Name was melted, now have a Magnaflow CA Specific
rotated toward firewall, just before midpoint i think.
New Dizzy, D16A6, good ignitor
ECU marked for 88-91, plugs fit, but you could be right, it may be looking for something.
Car definitely smells better with the new cat, and the new PCV valve. I did notice my car seemed to be consuming about a quart of oil after the rebuild, and felt really hot under the hood. I think part of the issue was the old PCV forcing blowby into the system - does that make sense?
No o2 codes, but should I clean or swap it anyway?

Leave the O2 unless it fails. Could have one on stanby though. I would order a NTK or Denso. Rockauto or amazon should have a better price than local parts stores.
Have you srt the ignition timing with a light?

Nope, I havent since I replaced the PCV valve. I know i am supposed to readjust the idle too, havent gotten to yet, finished closed to 10 last nite and didnt want to disturb neighbors.

I currently have 4 other car projects going, so I'm not ready t o get into anything on thi a right away.
But I'd like to fix the body, then throw a D16A6 in it, grab some 89-91 Si hubcaps, and more or less have an Si sedan.
LOL everyone has bad luck with 4th gens. They're old as **** and falling apart. Most people don't care for them like we do unfortunately.
Here's the conversation I had with my son when I told him I was giving the car to my friend:
Son - Are you keeping the Civic
Me - No, I'm giving it to Mr. Alan
Son - Why? I wanted it
Me - You're mother already told you that you weren't getting it. Besides, Mr. Alan Has had bad luck with Civics and giving him a new start
Son - But isn't your car a Civic
Me - Yes, but he's had bad luck with his Civics
Son - But once you give it to him, won't it be his Civic?
Me - *Blank stare

I got told this weekend by my son, dad your going bald.
MY daughter replies dad I can't put my hair clip in your hair.
But
I can on your back hair.
Walks off chuckling.
Nothing like being owned by your own kids.
