Guys, I need to know what I should do with the manual steering rack before I put it on the sedan. Is there a rebuild kit or something I need? This bad boy has a quarter of a million miles on it.

I'm just talking boots and whatnot. Not looking to spend much on the rack. I've already dropped about $3500 on this car since January.

That's not a rebuild kit, that is a quick ratio rack which if used for parallel parking is a real PITA. With my 24mm front sway, steering response is QUICK at speed, I'd hate to know how my ish would feel with the quaife unit.

Matt, You will want to disassemble the rack, clean it WELL and remove all the old grease. Based on this pic....

You want to replace 10,12,8,38,28,29,14,15,20,25,27,11,23,&24.

You also want to inspect all the other parts of the rack and pinion, as well as 2,3,4,5 and replace if necessary. Once you have everything, get yourself some good grease, grease it up well, and put it back together according to specs of which rack you have.

Edit- don't complain, I've put more than $5k in mine, and I still have more stuff I plan to replace and do.

could look a lot better, even the wife made a sad face looking at it lol. right side looks pretty bad, but working with epoxy is rather messy and i sanded too much with the Dremel. I'll make the second one look better. but this is a good first try IMO
get some of that "plastic bondo" to smooth it out. Even run-of-the-mill bondo would work on that.

I do, car is really sensitive at highway speeds, but canyon runs, the car feels great, and responsive through the switchbacks.

I'm afraid to really add it up, but including the car I may have invested somewhere in the $7500 range since I bought it three years ago.

don't do it, you'll be upset. I was bored yesterday and decided to add it all up. Bought the car for $2400 and over the last 2.5 years I’ve spent like $8400. I don’t know where I got that much money from. Current build is right at $3900

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. "Where the heck did I get $3500 since January and how is it that my wife knows nothing about it?"

Yea adding up mods is never a good idea...with the amount I've spent on modding beater Japanese cars I could have a nice Porsche or something lol
