50 trim T3 versus 57 trim T4

I got some older t3's for a good price, then got a great deal on this t3 housing/backplate machined to fit this 57 trim wheel [pre-balanced]. I do plan on having the t3 shaft balanced too, but I just think this is funny. I'm more interested to find out how the 'tiny' t3 housing affects spool time rather than cfm's. Its mating to a stg1 .63ar exhaust on my built d16z6 (to see if I like it more than the t3/t04b), and I think if nothing else, it will be what I use if I try for 350-400whp with the head I'm building.

I'll probably get flames for this, but if you knew what this cost me - and the fact they're all garrett parts - you'd forgive the fact I'm stuffing a 450whp compressor wheel into a 250whp T3 housing.

I'm hoping to do a back to back spool test on it, but I'm going to be careful about the timing for both. I don't plan on anything beyond 15psi until I hit the dyno. It will be a week or two, as I have to assemble the motor now, then drive it like crazy to make sure the rings seal nicely.

I predict it will be fun regardless.

Same thing. I got the S-trim coupled to a metric t3 chra and I think a nissan .63 ar housing (the odd 7-bolt flange). My guess is that it was an old user-upgraded turbo, in the sense it was a t3 when first put on a car.

I've always liked using atypical setups. I just feel the 50-trim t3 is a bit too small for a built d16, and a 57trim t3/t04e stg3 .48ar is too big for a 1.6L street car. Its not the best compromise for peak WHP numbers, but should get me a decent spool time along with decent power.

i think you have it twisted. The wheel is fairly large for that housing. Let us know how it works out.
