Default What wrong with my turbo?... =(

I just recently took off my turbo kit and running all motor now, here's the problem.

While driving without boosting everything seems fine, then when I'm boost a **** load of smoke will shoot out my exhaust like some smoke screen or something lol then just recently its started making some winding sound when boosting... Somebody help? Is it time for me to get a new turbo? The problem was a kink in the return i believe or it was forcing the oil to travel uphill for the oil return. Fixed all that and still had that smoking and winding problem. Turbo is internally wastegated if that had anything to do with it. Checked my charge piping and there was oil in it..what now?...I'm in like stuck mode. Don't really know what to do.?

the seals in your turbo may be shot
When oil is forced to travel backwards it can mess some stuff up.

Take it apart and try to get everything cleaned.. Try to get all of the oil out of the charge pipign and as much as you can out of the turbo.

Depending on the oil and howlong it was there will determine if the turbo seals are shot.

Rebuild is around 130+ unless your wheels are f'd up which would be more to replace the comp/turbine wheels. Send it in for a quote.

I'd guess you don't have a restrictor on the oil inlet? 3 main things that can blow seals on the turbo are: 1) excessive pressure from excessive blow-by and/or a crappy pcv/catchcan setup, 2) terrible oil return backing oil into the turbo, 3) high oil pressure on the inlet side (>35psi) due to very little or no restriction on the inlet.

If you are going over ~2500 rpm, you're producing >35psi of oil pressure. Over that you're sending more to the turbo, and upon decel (atmospheric pressure on outside of seals) you have that 35-70psi worth of oil pushing past the seals.

to take apart the turbo, you have to turn the comp nut clockwise. righty tighty, left loosey doesn't apply. a used t2 from a sr would cost you about the same as a mild rebuild. or you could get a rebuild kit for about $50 and try urself.

compressor is the cold side...

definitely sounds like your turbo seals are just shot, i'd replace just the turbo with something bigger if all your other components will support it(injectors, fuel managment, etc)

Good luck.

thanks for all the help, I decided I'll just probably sell the kit and save up and pick up a different one or maybe just pick up a new turbo itself.
