Default Smokey Turbo again....

Hey guys how you doing ?

I seem to have a problem with my turbo again. The turbo is a garrett T3 with a 2mm (.78) oil restrictor that has recently been rebuilt by a turbo rebuild centre, over here in the UK.

The problem is that i'm seeing a bit of smoke coming out my exhaust like i was before i got the turbo rebuilt, but not as bad. It only happens when i'v slowed down and i give it a rev and not when i'm accelerating. So i'm guessing it has to be to do with the oil seal right ? or is there anything else what could cause this ?

I didn't have the oil restrictor on when i first had the turbo and it smoked like crazy so i sent it off to be rebuilt. When i got it back i stuck the restrictor on straight away and its been fine for like 2 weeks.

Before anyone asks my oil return is good with no kinks or uphills

Thank you

might be your rings..

Take out spark plugs, spray PB blaster on top of the piston, that should clean the ring of oil build up..

See how that works then come back to us.

Sorry i forgot to mention, its a freshly rebuilt engine with new rings, stem seals ect...
The compressions and leak downs are spot on...

If there was some swarf or bits in the oil could it cause this ?

Yeh engine was broke in properly. I done around 3000 being NA then stuck the turbo on. The valve seals and guides are new to and they have been fitted properly.

It has to be down to the turbo as its smoking exactly like it was before i had it rebuilt, but no half as bad.

Thanks for your reply's by the way

This sounds like something in the oil return line. You'll need to get pictures of the manifold/turbo/return line setup in order to help diagnose this. You don't know how many times a good turbo was suspect for "seals" (god, that term is funny), when the turbo's cartridge could be off of vertical too much, cocked at the wrong angle, or the return line kinked in a way that causes oil to back up into the cartridge and expel itself out of the turbine housing.

Get those pictures up.

Can you get one that shows the return line going UP to the return flange of the turbocharger?

Yeh i can but it will have to be tomorrow now though as i'm in bed. The return goes straight up to the turbo from that bottom picture. Theres no kinks and its not on at any sort of angle.

Thanks again, i will post up more pictures tomorrow when i get home from work.

that return hose looks to be very small.. you should be at AN-10 sizing.. so Shodan was correct when oil is backing up..

I have never seen an oil pressure switch attached to the fitting on the turbo, usually these are on the back of the block..

and that last pic shows an oil leak somewhere..above your brass fitting.

The oil return is -10an my friend, its the same size as my breather hoses. Its probably hard to tell by the picture though so i'm sorry i should of said...

I have a oil pressure switch on the block and the turbo to monitor the oil pressure on both of them

Yeh the oil leak... its only tiny and i mean tiny, Its coming from the sump gasket. I'm going to change it as soon as i get chance most likely been next week or the week after.

Thank you

I'v got the rest of the pictures up guys.

The oil return does seem to go up a very slight hill, it quite hard to see by the picture unless you put you screen at a angle. I pulled the oil return off the sump to see if any oil would come out and it did.

Does this mean i have a return issue ? ?

Thanks again guys ! ! !

maybe try a 45* off the pan. line looks to flatten out pretty good at the bottom, maybe the oil isnt getting back into the pan

^^ that brass fitting ur using looks wayy small. Usually drain lines should be -10 with a bigger opening. your not getting a good flow back to the pan because the line might be -10, but that brass fitting is alot smaller causing your oil to back up.

Take off that brass thing, get a good oil pan tap and weld it in. -10 weld in bung

What do you mean by -10 with a bigger opening ? Would this be ok ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...id=p2759.l1259 The braided tube is -10an by the way.

Thank you

edited above ^^

Yes, you need as much flow back to the pan as possible. that fitting on ebay should work fine.. but that needs to connect to the weld in bung on the pan.

^^ theres the problem. the fitting your using are too small. you want alot of space on the return line. both of those fittings are creating oil to be backing up in the turbo and not letting it drain.

Change these fittings asap! the thicker threads is the size you need to maintain on both sides like the fittings posted above

Yoy must sent your turbine to a better turbo mechanic.. The first one didn't do good job....

or like the other guy says use as thick as possible turbine oil return.. Start from this and if the thicker return don't work then mmake a visit to the guy that have done the last service to your turbine..

i would use the 45 deg on the pan itself. If your drain on the turbo is facing down, then just get a straight flange so the oil flows straight down then hits the 45* fitting. then u should be good to go.

I swear if i have to pull out charts and graphs after this, im going to get pissed.
