Turbo making a strange fluttering sound when spooling up
I don’t know how else to explain the sound, but lately after I ran my car kinda hard one day (a couple 40-100 runs) the turbo has started sounding kinda weird and it hasn’t gone away. The best way I could describe it is that it sounds like it is kinda making a fluttering sound when spooling up. It still spools up to 10 psi fine, but makes this weird noise when doing so. Also, I have noticed that since this started it is backfiring a bit more as well. I checked all the vacuum lines and oil lines and they are all connected and fine. Does anyone have any idea what it could be or why it’s acting up? Thanks for the help.

hows the engine's condition? mine started fluttering when it blew a ringland on one of the pistons...sounds like the turbo's pulsating when it spools up right?

Re: Turbo making a strange fluttering sound when spooling up (Jockobo)
the engine seems fine. i should also mention that it only makes this sound when it starts to spool, and not when just cruising around. so anything higher then like 15 vacuum, it wont make the noise, but anything from like 15 vacuum through 10psi it makes the noise.

Could it be compressor surge? Don't know how that could be related to making some hard runs though.

Check to see if you can move the turbo with your hands without moving the turbine housing. Sometimes the 4 small bolts come loose i think they are 3/8 size. make sure all the bolts are tight. Otherwise check to see if you have any external oil leaks or excessive shaft play.
