Default Ring Gapping

I used a large ring gap on my JE pistons for my GSR. I used the formula from JG to figure out the ring gap but smokes alittle during startup and during acceration. The instruction told me to use this:
3.184(Bore) X .006"(Top Ring Turbo)= .0192"
3.184(Bore) X .0045" (Second Ring Turbo)= .0144"
Oil ring= .015"
I think that this gap is too large but is any of your turbo built motors smoking. I dont mind the smoke if its normal but i dont want too much blowby under Boost.
If I use the ring gap for the moderate performance I dont want the rings to scrape into the cylinder walls due to high heat and a smaller gaping.
Thanks Jason

That ring gap is not all that big for a turbo motor. You shouldn't have much blowby at all and definetly it shouldn't be smoking. What color is the smoke (blue or black)? If it is black then it is just running to rich but if it is blue then you have a problem somewhere.

You shouldn't have to file the oil rings. Paul

I used the same large gap in my motor in preparation for boost...I don't even have boost yet! It smokes with 30 weight oil but with some oil thickener stuff it doesn't..
The bore is pretty hefty so yeah my eyes bugged out seeing how large it was gonna be..

Your upper 2 gaps are fine and won't cause smoking. If you touched the oil ring, you probably ruined it. It should be run as is. The real question is how you prepared the cylinder walls? Was it a fresh bore and hone or are you just throwing in new pistons and rings?
Also if you did not deburr (smooth out) where you cut your upper ring gaps, you can scar the cylinder and cause oiling from that point.

I did hone out the cylinder walls corectly! I don't think the rings had sharp edges on them. But I know that on one of the pistons I did I noticed that the one of the two top rings would not spin around the piston easilt since there was a edge catching. If the ring could not spin aroung the piston like It should would that cause smoke.

Do the 9 second race hondas smoke at start up, Ive heard that they only use two of the three rings. Less friction=More power but what about more blowby that cant be good for a race engine?
Well I dont think I filed the oil rings, I did I check them to make sure they were at the right spec. Should I have used a ring gapping tool I filed them on hand but carefully. After I filed the rings I closed them together to make sure that they would seal properly. I did a wet compression test and it raised extremely so i dont think its coming from the headgasket, but it probably failed from the large ring gap. Was smoking with normal 10W30 oil and smokes now with synthetic oil.

Am not running the turbo yet

If the ring did not spin freely once it was installed on the piston, it was not deburred completely.
If this motor had out of round cylinders before you honed it, it still has them. Only boring will fix that.
How did you check the ring gaps? Closing them to see if they seal is not the way they seal.
How did you hone the cyl walls?

I did not bore since i wanted to do the turbo and didnt want to decrease the size of the cylinders. I did close them together to make sure they would seal properly. Maybe a ring gappin tool would be good. If I remove the cylinders I should be able to see where the cylinders are scraping more and not if they are out of round. I could also use the cylinder bore guage at the same place on the cylinder on three different angles to see the difference in the readings too right.
Wishing I would have done the b20 bore sleeves now!

Well Im gapping my rings again and saw this old post just incase anyone cares the reason it was smoking was from out of roung cylinder walls and also another problem was the place that did the head work did not pu the exhaust valve guides in properly and smokes really bad. Also the cylinder to piston wall clearance was way too large.
Well I did resleeve the block and did it correctly!

Did you let the motor break in yet? I gappped my rings too and it smoked plus burned oil for the first 200-300 miles, after that it's fine.

NO my engine before was burning oil for more than 1000 miles. I have not built the new engine yet in the process.
