Reliability on a road trip
Had a question to all of you that have been blessed with Turbo, how reliable is it to drive your car for about 2 1/2 or 3 hours straight, no speeding or anything like that or boosting while driving. but just a normal drive. I ask this because im getting a Greddy professionaly droped onto my ZC this weekend and heading out to visit my parents. Should I reconsider a rental??? Thanks in advance.
I know it depends on the setup but boos usually kicks in on or about 4000rpm right? or no? im just woried about something leaking or anything like that, you know what I mean. Plus were my parents live its way out in the sticks.
Most cars should be fine.
There was actually a post regarding this exact same issue just last week.
Do a search maybe you can read some of their posts regarding long distance drives.
I don't think anyone that posted had any problems, some even got better gas mileage!

I drove for almost 14 hours straight.. California to Colorado... even boosted a little on the way there.. getting on ramps and one street race in Vegas.... car ran fine, no problems the entire time.. except that damn gas tank kept getting empty for some reason....

That is right, if you are not way into the throttle then it should not boost. It may get to zero vacuum/zero boost but not go into boost as long as the throttle is not opened too far.

believe it or not... thats all in mytool box on a road trip.... (i actuallycarry my toolbox often)
thanks I myself carry lots of extra stuff like that, my dad says why carry so much junk, but I tell him you never now. I can pretty much figure out for what to use all this stuff for but not the Cooat Hanger you got me there oh and the vacum line and fuel injection hose, why lines tend to pop or burst when boosting or hight temps?? thanks for all the info.
coat hanger can be used to hang your shirt up on a tree while fixing your car.. OR you can use it to tie up exhaust, temporary hose clamp by twisting it around a hose end... wire a light to a line so you can work with both hands.. make a stand for the light...
fuel injection line in caseyou actually have a small coolant line break/crack.. i know.. i just did and well, i reached in the trunk and replaced the line almost immediatly.. (it rested against a sharp hose stock clamp and eventually sliced the hose)...
vacume line can be used should something happen in the engine bay... i know a guy who had a vacume line for the wastegate somehow managed to get next to the block.. close enough to melt... now if he wouldnt have caught it in time, the damage owuld have been worse.. and having a little line can save you a tow fee... even it it's just routing it to the wastegate/turbo type setup...
it's the stupid sheet that you dont think of on a road trip that will get you...
toss some misc stuff in a box with your basic tools.. you never know...

my car went on 8 hour trip this summer in 32c heat with the air cond on the whole and it was fine. did about 80mph the whole way and did not notice a difference from my normal n/a milage on the highway. Towards the end of the trip the IC had a nice coating of bugs that rised the egts a bit but a quick stop for gas and a wash fixed that problem up.
