post pics of your welds !!!
yeap...24guage or something like that...it's very, very thin. You just have to play with the heat and wire settings so you won't burn holes while welding, plus get ebough heat to penetrate the metal

what are your techniques and settings for welding that **** ??

I'm so happy...hahha...j/ki usually set wire feed at about 10-15 and voltage anywhere from 2-4.
Just go slowly and move the gun back and forth, so that it moves the molten metal around...teh zig zag or half moon works also

oh .. don't flatter yourself. they're OK... J/K... im just suprised u could actualy weld such godamn thin metals. maybe i just need to create no gappage at all with my charge pipes 18 gauge. cuz i always have a problem with melting it tru, i used the #2 voltage setting and about 25 wire feed, i kept burnin holes so i just did voltage 1 setting at 15 wire speed and it was ok, but i wasnt used to the speed ... ill be finsishin my manifold tomarorw, ill see if i can get some pics.

Does that mean you like my welds?

We are very superficial here..I sometimes lose it when I make an ugly weld. I'll spend an hour grinding it down and posibly covering it with a better weld
A bad weld is embarrasing, I would never let one leave my shop with my name on it! A good weld takes time and skill, something everyone should want to show off.
that is horrendous hehe
j/k. The bead is all over the place, I'll have to show mine later tonight
How thick is the metal? What wire size are you using?

well, it's still better than my ghetto *** core flux weld on my DP
hehehehe

very true, the way a weld looks reflects upon the welder's image. BUt it is true though....as long as teh weld penetrates, then you're straight
do I need to post my oil pan ? LMAOL

One thing that greatly improved my welding was an auto tinting helmet. Only gets dark when it needs to be otherwise you can see without flipping up the helmet.
yes defenitely on the auto-darkening helmet. The problems im having is I can't continously weld the bead, I have to stop, rotate the damn pipe start again so its not smooth all the way through
here's a ic pipe i did awhile back. You notice the start and stop action going on, bead starts/stops/starts. Sorry for the blurry pics

i tried an auto tinting helmet once.....every time i would start welding, i would motion my head down.....trying to rotate the helmet down, even though it was already down! a regular helmet is VERY habit forming
sometimes i do the same thing when i solder

how do u work with having to start n stop ?? any tricks to that ? i notice that gets annoyin, havin to rotate **** and it ***** the bead up cuz you gotta start n stop
eventually u have to stop, unless u have one of those machines that rotates the parts(cant remember the name). it takes a little practice to get ur wrist to "rotate" and continue the bead. just keep trying
wait till jon post pics of his work tomorrow!

I got a question for you guys. How many of you have gotten "sunburn" from welding? I went to the shop last night to run those beads that i posted above and this morning my hand is totally red and sunburnt. Must be the way I use my left hand to steady the right when I'm using the MIG. This is the second time in like 3 weeks that I have done this.

you're suppose to wear gloves because the welding emmits a lot of heat and UV rays.
i've got a "tan" from welding a few times
its usually when im welding for extended periods of time. FWIW some welders put sunblock on before they weld.

Dang...Im really starting to miss welding. I welded almost every day in high school in a class call Advanced Manufacturing Technology. I wish I had some of my sample welds to show you guys...didn't even think to keep them after I was done with school.
A majority of the welding I did was MIG. I got extremely good at it. It sucks though cause about a year later I had to make my self a test pipe, just in that year my welds went WAY down in quality. there weren't very flat or straight.
I really want to get a nice MIG setup, but don't want to spend a ton of money. What would be best buy for $500 or under?

Looking good,
Im going to take my I-CAR weld certification tests come this april.
paul, you probably get better puddles if you use .023 wire for that gauge metal you are welding. .030 would be good for around 18/20 gauge sheet metal

I used .030...this is like some 24 gauge sheetmetal I had laying around

It's basically the same welder. Miller and Hobart are the same company now.
However, the Hobart only has a 4 position voltage selector and the Miller has "infinite" adjustment. The 4 position limitation is going to be a pain if it just doesn't seem to work well with the thickness of metal you are welding.

I wish i had a tig welder, if my shop was a fab shop rather than a body shop I probably would.
