Default My turbo has dropped like 3 times help?!?!?!

Yeah, it sounds strange people tell me, but its true my turbo falls off at the connection that goes to the exhaust manifold..what it seems to do is back out the nuts on all four bolts and then it drops! Its weird, does anyone have idea's?

I'm surprised you dont notice a huge leak before it falls off

This is common from the heat and vibration. All you can do is use lock washers. You must hear the exhaust leak before it actually falls off, right?

well, yeah pretty much, but I was driving back from a job interview. What could I do? It was a 30 minute drive ...thats about it. It seems to do this with the extreme heat. since my interview was quick and short. I was out of there in about 20 minutes. driving another 30 minutes...I think it happened sort of quick. I barely took this car on a trip this length since a while. I havent been getting on the throttle because of how this crap has been going on. Im now going to see if Loi can help me out. I need to fix it, Can I do this with out a jack up?

what kinda manifold do you have ? your best bet is to get studs and use nuts on them and then tack weld the nuts in place.

Cone washers (such as those found on turbo DSM's) work very well at keeping those bolts put. That and they aren't affected by heat (like lock washers). Don't ask me how they work, but I know they keep those bolts PUT.

I dont think I can tack weld anything at the moment. I will definitely go for the more solid stuff later. cone washers? sounds cool. I need to somehow take off the 18g turbo from the turbo manifold... this is the piece that connects to my iron cast turbo manifold made by greddy.

Go to McMaster-Carr's site and search for "conical washer." You can get them with serrations on them also for better hold. They work better than lock washers because of their shape. The cone shape means it has more material than a flat washer...when you crank it down it just flattens out, but is still under tension trying to "pop" back up to it's conical shape. A lock washer has a break in it. Under high heat, the metal looses it's springiness and the washer collapses since it is not continuous. Kind of hard to explain, but a conical washer should work. Never thought about it before! I may buy some.

Call Stan at Fast-Turbo (214)783-7247

He'll hook you up with some really nice bolts, lock washers, and nuts to bolt up your turbo.

My bolts broke once, and I orderded this kit. It's never happened again. What kind of manifold are you using, and are the holes threaded?

This might help!

Ive been using the "star" type lock washers with good success... but the "internal star" type, not the "external star" type.. you can find them at any "mom & pop" hardware store.

HA HA, thats how they work! See thats why I drive a factory turbo car. I'm to dumb to figure anything out on my own so I just play dummie and follow the service manual which states to use the conical washers or certian doom will follow.

Greddy's tend to do that at least mine did until I added longer studs.

this used to happen to me... then i used a set of washers called "nord-loc" they are vibration and heat resistant lock washers... most hardware stores should have them... i got mine from an industrial fastner place....

BTW - regular lock washers wont work, the heat will make them loose their spring and after a few heat cycles they will be just like regular washers...

OK, I need to order a set of bolts and nuts that are going to hold my turbo together with no problems. You all have listed a few good sources. Can anyone leave me a link or a phone with some prices and only leave waht you think is going to hold it. I have to get these overnight somehow...thanks, keith
