Exhaust clamp broke on my SC61!
i just put this precision sc61 on not two weeks ago, and i hear something fall and start pinging down the road the other day. i wasn't sure what it was, so i popped the hood to check for missing parts. sure enough, one of the two half moon shaped clamps was gone, and two of the bolts broke off into the turbo housing. i got precision to send me 2 new clamps and new bolts for free, but this sucks....i gotta take the turbo back off and have the bolts drilled out. i think it's cause i torqued the bolts down too tight after i rotated the exhaust housing. they were the bolts that were assembled on the turbo from precision, so they should be strong enough, but i guess the heat cycle got to them. the remaining ones are turning white, which im told is a sign of severe stress. the performance of my car is really starting to suck, which i hope is because of this. i don't really hear an exhaust leak at the turbo, especially at idle........but do you think this could cause the performance of the turbo to be worse? i could see that maybe at full boost it may leak some........at least that's what i'm hoping the problem is. here's a pic of what i'm talking about. those two clamps i drew are supposed to overlap the center cartridge when it's put together, holding the turbine housing to the cartridge.

you might not have to drill them out. A friends did this on a new turbo and he managed to spin then out with a pair of grips. The heads had snaped off so about 1mm was sticking out. Might be worth a try before you take the turbo off.

I had one that break too and I spun it out just like you mentioned

If I read this correctly, your saying that if a bolt/nut starts to turn white that too much stress or too much heat stress is being applied to it?
The reason why I'm asking is because I have one nut on my turbo manifold that looks a drop white .... hmmm

Damn, I've installed about 20 turbo's and have about 10 friends who run precision turbo's and I have never seen that happen. That is crazy. What are you using for a flexpipe? and what about motor mounts?

I am running a Turbonetics Turbo and the bolts on my exhaust housing are turning white, but I have never had a problem with them. I think thats just because they are treated bolts and the heat is doing it.

i've got a 10" flex and all motor mounts (front shaved). i think it was because i torqued the bolts down to tight after i rotated the turbine housing.......and then when they heated up they were just under so much stress and broke off. i was hoping that i was just getting some sort of exhaust leak there, because that's an easy fix problem. but i'm afraid that maybe i cracked one of my ringlands already. i've noticed a loss in power recently, so i'm pretty bummed.

A common misconception is that heat causes stress. This is untrue. Heat actually relieves stress. Thermal cycling is what causes "fatigue", not stress. Fatigue leads to crack formation and propogation.
