Made a quick CAI for my Turbo, now the car makes less boost.......
I have been batteling some nasty IAT's lately so I rigged up a quick but solid 4" CAI for my Turbo that runs along the bottom of the front bumper and draws air right next to my Intercooler, I was suprised to see a loss of 3-4 psi with the tube attached, I am running WG spring pressure in 1,2,3rd gear and 21psi in 4th, but was only getting 16-17 after the CAI. I am happy to see IAT's just cruising down a good 10-15 deg, more in boost, but it seems like I am going to have to add a good amount of duty to get back to 21psi. I am not running a filter on it just an open end for now as I was just testing it. I kind of expected if anything for it to stay the same or pick up a few psi under WOT..... is this normal? The tube I made probably has a small leak in it somewhere as it has a bunch of couplers on it but I sure didnt expect it to loose that much PSI.

i'm not a scientist or anything but it would take longer for air to get into the turbo, which is why ppl use screens.
but i guess it does make sens that it would be harder to reach full boost.
just my guess...

Yea that is what I am assuming, but I remember reading from a few people that had Intakes and Air Boxes that they were picking up boost and not loosing it. Its not really an issue I was just looking for some clarification.

The boost should not change much, if any with a cold air intake. There usually is a 1-3 mph increase at the track with one at the same boost level, and usually at least a 10-20 degree IAT drop.

That is what I though, does 3-4 psi sounds substantial? I have definately noticed the IAT's drop even just cruising around, and the turbo is much much quieter. We all know the stock IAT sensor readings are skewed but I see a noticeable difference when making a 2/3/ part 4 pull as they drop down very fast now.

I actually picked up about a 1/2 psi on our CRX with the intake in the bumper, and a few other customers have made the same boost or picked up a tad higher with the colder air.

A leak in the intake pipe before the turbo wouldn't affect boost pressure.

i put a 4 inch intake pipe out my front bumper beside my intercooler with a screen over the end. i didnt lose any boost pressure because of it, however when we retuned i was able to run about 2 more pounds safely
