For most of the intercooler kits come with I/C piping that is made for a B16/Type R or LS style intake manifold which sets the throttle body higher than with the GS-R intake manifold. So most do switch to the Skunk2 because it fits the GS-R cylinderhead bolt pattern, yet at the same time sets the throttle body in the position that most I/C kits (including the go-autoworks kits). This is the only reason why one would normally change the intake for sub-500whp setups. Otherwise, it is not necessary.

I can make 400 with a gt2871 and have the top end of a bigger turbo (example a 50 trim) but have the down low torque production that peaks and carries where a larger turbo would just start spooling.

Smaller turbo does not equal little power....people needs to get over this idea that they need huge turbos for a tiny power goal and complain because its too laggy and sucks to drive on the street. You wouldn't dd a gt42r on a b16 now would you?

Comparing a 50 trim t04e to a gt2871 is the same comparison. Why have tons of lag and have a shitty power band as well as a narrow rpm range to use.. especially when you could size a turbo properly for your power goal and purpose of vehicle and have a retardedly huge, fat, torque loving power band - see it all the time at our shop and on various forums.
Please correct me if im wrong, but what i got from this post is that the gt2871 is better than the t3/t4 50 trim turbo i proposed..

Got a LOT more choices than that.. I'm always a fan of the GT-R series, but you've got TONS to look at.

The 2871r will have better transient response (between shifts, etc) as well as a slightly better boost curves... earlier response means a more broad power band vs the 50 trim
However it does cost more.

I'm always a big believer in finding the most responsive turbo for a given power goal... no point in having a 400hp car that has a 2000-3000 rpm power band

I'd go a bit more with the 57 trim, GT3255B journal bearing or 60 trim for a GS-R over the 50..
