how sturdy is the d16?
well i have a small turbo set up pieced together for my car, but i just been pretty hesitant because it's my daily driven car and i don't want to abuse it too much, and i always seem to read about people blowing their engines. i know part of blowing your engine is due to too much boost on a stock engine. i plan on leaving my block stock i think, because i don't really want to make this some extreme car. so basically what i would like to know is what would i have to worry about when i turbo my d16a6. what would be some potential problems?
thanks

Ringlands and rods, with a realistic whp limit in the neighborhood of 200-240 depending how big a liar you talk to.
But, you can definitely have a reliable, daily driven boosted D16. How do I know? It's how I get to work every morning. d16Y8 with stock internals and 7 psi of boost, driven every day for the last 9 months, and running perfectly.

i installed my turbo on my d16 1 1/2 yrs ago and still running good...i did have it tuned after it being on for a year...i would highly suggest getting it tuned so you dont run too lean and blow it too...on my dx motor @ 7psi stock block and head i dynoed @ 161whp...158wtq....good luck...

Get some type of engine/fuel mangement sytstem, Hondata,VAFC, etc. Get that stuff tuned. You may be suprised how much a stock block will handle!

currently 6psi tuned and 8psi untuned. about to tune for 8psi and 10psi. over 4000 boosted miles so far. definately get it wideband tuned.

i know that when boosted it you run too lean it is horrible for the engine...how reliable are a/f gauges as far as gauging the a/f ratio. i have heard some people say that they are not that acurate. For instance, if i am driving and it goes real lean, do I pull over to avoid blowing the engine. Sorry, not trying to jack the thread. i just thought this fit. TIA

I am currently boosting 8 psi daily on the d16y8 block.
I know a guy who pushed the d16 block with stock internals to 20 psi before blowing it.
I'd say stay at 5-6 psi w/o an intercooler, 7-8 with an intercooler, mild tuning 8-10 psi, and with proper tuning (AEM EMS, Hondata) 10+.

i have a friend that runs 10psi daily on his y8 with a 2mm greddy head gasket using the afc hack. 25,000 miles so far with the setup..no problems. The motor now has 50k miles. On 91 octane cali pump gas no less.

Check my site below.
I run my 233,000 mile D16a6 engine 7-8psi daily for the past year (summers only) and have no oil burning or anything. I bet the 7-8 psi doesn't really shorten the engine life much at all.
Now for reliability, that really depends on tuning and how well you put the turbo on the car. Cheap out during the install and it can cause the reliability to be lacking.

it's pretty sturdy and will last if you have a good head on you. when i say this i mean a few things. whatever setup u run, make sure it's tuned well. secondly... it's not a factory turbo car, bashing on it on EVERY light won't be a good idea. and always keep check on everything... be paranoid... it helps (like when u blow a vacuum line on the way home and not realize until u do ur daily routine underhood inspection )

they can produce over 300 with the right fuel management and tuning... btw my motor had over 160k miles on it and it was all STOCK internals (just a greddy headgasket and arp head studs) plenty of people can vouch for me as well on here and on other boards.... on a very safe level you can run 12psi and produce around 250 give or take some and it will be able to be ran all day long.

One thing that alot of people want and thats reliability but dont want to do the work to keep the reliability...make sure you change your oil on a regular basis, check your oil once a week. Make sure you do you tune-ups on a regular basis to and you will be fine with your turbo engine...i run a vafc for fuel control for 7psi and that is fine...just remember that regular maintance will keep your engine running strong....
