I guess its not the fuel pump then. I remember feeling what you described when I was running boost off the wastegate. Since I bought a mbc its got a lot better. Maybe its the spring on the WG opening prematurely and that is the loss of power you describe? Then when you lay off the throttle it closes a bit again? I dont think you could actually "feel" the leaning out so easily as you described.
I would buy a mbc. You could get to 10 psi and the wastegate would open a little later. I have the turbonetics and it holds 14 psi w/o problems. $40 bucks too.
