Bent Carillos
i ran these rods in a built/stroked 2.1L engine...to 9500 all the time...make well over 200whp
and never once had an issue...... pretty much, earl fucked up big time...that's about all i can get from reading this whole thing.......if i was carrillo, i'd tell him to f-off too coming asking for help after doing somethign so ignorant. you think crower is gonna help the ppl out that made 600ish whp and then bent their rods up even though they say they're only reccommended for around 500? no, why, cause they don't have to becuase the customer was abusing them

kinda of like hondata saying they dont care if my car wouldnt even idle or drive when cold when they first released the s300 and it didnt work....
I mean it clearly says for off road use only .....who do I think I am trying to drive it on the street ?? lol

My facts are as follows...
1)I bought rods that came in a Carrillo box
2)I installed them in a customer's high WHP engine.
3)There was no bolt problem with them. They just bent.
4)I replaced the rods with Pauters for my customer at no charge.
5)Their web site stated they were made from the same blanks as their expensive rods and the only difference was there were less hand operations and more machine operations, therefore the cheaper price. Right or wrong, I relied on that statement.
6)They have a great rep. I relied on that.
7)They offered me no help what so ever. They could have straightened them quickly. They could have replaced the bad ones. They could have taken them in trade on their better rod. They chose to just dismiss me.
8)If I f...ed up in choosing Carrillo, fine. I make mistakes, who gives a sh.. I made it right for everyone involved.
9)My intent is only to share my experiences, good or bad. The only way I can respond to Carrillo is to never buy their rods again...and I do buy a hell of alot of rods. I'm sure this will not effect Carrillo in the slightest.

but one thing Richard was readily asking me about the JE rods, when i told him the situtation... he made it clear the bolts had something to do with the their rods... i told him about the shortblock and what kind of power level i was looking for, and he said i would need the Carrillo 3/8" CARR bolt not the JE boxed Carrillo with the 5/16" CARR bolt, he said dont even run the 5/16" bolt on anything over 250whp... he told me the 3/8" bolt will take whatever i can dish out at it...
also something interesting, is that yes eagle did copy Carrillo's h-beam design, as Carrillo was the first rod manufact on the market with the H-beam design, but here is what i would like to know.... when did Eagle upgrade there 5/16" bolt to the 3/8" bolt??? how many failures of them distorting and bending and breaking??? maybe after they looked and saw that Carrillo was already offering the 3/8" bolt.... maybe they went ahead and copied that too.... so the smaller bolt def. had something to do with the rods failure at that power level and also the biggest factor was the rods over all design being the a-beam...
yes a XXXX ammount of doller rod should perform, but not when they have it listed that its not for high HP applications specifically...
also i think that Carrillo is such a large domestic partner and there sport compact community is soo small that, i can see why they might give a shitty customer service in some aspects... you see all kinds of politics in this industry everyday even on honda-tech i know that for a fact.
Earl thats awesome you gave great customer service, thats why you do get a lot of bussiness and people on here swear by your quality work... i got the wrong $1,500 carrillo je boxed h-beams with the 5/16" CARR bolt in a motor ERL built me and i got them replaced from Josh & Dan at FSM for no extra charge with another $1,700 carrillo real h-beam with the 3/8" CARR bolt, and they sent the motor back to ERL to have them dissasemble it, and then reassemble it again... thats customer service as well....
not turning this into any shortblock war, just using a real life example of how your not the only person giving great customer service on this bored, so you cant put this all on carrillo..
also in #2 above you said you put them in a high WHP shortblock, when the a-beams are not designed for that, im sorry they just arent and it is clearly stated.... if you get some fresh CP pistons and melt them as soon as you hit the gas, b/c you don't tune the car right and lean it out or whatever goes wrong does... do you think CP is going to give you a new set of $500 pistons.. nah, but if your politically hooked up with them, maybe you could swing something, if you have a high paying upset customer, and you want their bussiness down the line??
i just dont see how Carrillo is at fault for the installer error on the wrong application?? maybe they gave you poor support, but you should have made a thread about their customer service, not about a weak *** bent pare of their economy rods, put in a shortblock with WHP goals that were higher then the rods were designed for...
Earl you are a good man, i just hope others when buying a Carrillo product, know that they have a few applications and the big dawg turbo rods have the larger bolts... it took me a while to gather all this information, and i hope people can bennifit from it.

haha sorry danny, i just want people to understand a few things about carrillo's rods, b/c i went threw a lot of trouble when i was picking them for my shortblock... and back in 2003 when i was just a little terd, and i still am
honda-tech was about helping people make their car better, faster, etc...
lately all i see anymore is marketing shcemes and bashing, and i cant stand it.. seems like the only people left making informative posts are jeff evans, and full-race geoff...mase, and buck have made some sick posts too recently... but its just not the same, it really changed in the last 3 years politically, and the types of people.
now everyone thinks they can just bolt on a 42r and run 9's...

This seems soo simple to me..
Someone with a great reputation on Honda-Tech puts an ALL MOTOR piston in a 700+whp turbo motor.. The rods bend.. Honda-Tech, as usually, swings from the nuts of the person who made this mistake..
I respect Earl and all that he does for the scene. But I think you made too many "assumptions" about a product ..
I can ABSOLUTELY GUARENTEE that if some newbie or "nobody" put an all motor rod into a 700+whp turbo motor - this thread would have died a LONG time ago and you would have ALL called him an idiot..
Honda-Tech does NOT make sense.

it makes perfect sense.
when most people on the board respect and know the person not to be an idiot they wont call him one.....if all they know about the person is based on 1 stupid thing they did its easier to define that person as an idiot

On Carrillo's site it says: "less-demanding and more economically oriented applications." How does that equate to an all-motor rod?
Also, what is the point of making an uber-lightweight rod for an economically oriented setup? Why not make it out of a different material to keep costs down and strength up? I really don't see the point of using their proprietary "Carrilloloy" in a rod intended to be more affordable if it means its going to end up costing twice as much as comparable rods.
My point is I understand why Earl assumed these rods could take the power. Judging by their online catalog, theres no real statement of power level, just a relative comparison to their top of the line rods. At $700 for a set, I'd assume they'd take more power than lesser-priced rods on the market, but then I'd end up in the same boat as Earl.

Let me see if I have this right. The Pro A rod is made of the same material as the Heavy Duty rod, but comes with a smaller , less duty bolt, and is 95 grams lighter, or 23% but should be able to withstand the same amount pressure and load, as the HD rod because the material is the same. Then why make the HD rod.
Now lets take a Turbo piston and machine 23% of the material off, think it will work at over 600 BHP?
I understand trying a lighter part, if it works, you go faster, if it does'nt, Oh well cost of going fast. Chalk it up to experiance.
Real racers are alway's pushing the limit, when it blowes up, you back up a step.
Material wise, Carrillo has made the best rods for over 20 years, the CARR bolt is an industry standard, seeing how far you can streach the limits is called " the cost of going fast"
When you do not want to try the TI pins, or the cadsidium coating, or the lighter parts, because they may fail, OK Mid-pack will always be mid-pack.
Inovation always has it's risks, and there ain't no warrenty's in racing.
Gee wiz, I bet Warren and Johnson, John Force, or Hendrick's have never blowed up a motor.
But, but, but, I paid over $600.00 dollars for the lighest steel rods there are and they bent, get over it, I have a set on my desk, but they are for a 300 BHP NA motor. I read the directions.
Want to guess on how many sets of of Eagle rods, VS Carrillo, Panki, Cosworth were used at the Daytona 24 hour race? Want to guess for the Daytona 500?

D@nnY, where did I bash Earl? If you want to go faster you try stuff. If it does not work, big deal.Just don't wine. How many engine's have you built? If you are just a parts seller, not an inovator, then just go with the standard, mid-pack stuff. No big deal.
Personally I think Carrillo know,s more than you, or 99.9% of the people on here.
Racing is about going faster, street stuff with a warranty, use the biggest, and strongest.

another full post of you saying a bunch of irrelevant Bs ....... Thanks for letting everyone know what racing is about your my hero
.....
I built my own engine and a few other fast cars all with great results
Earl replaced the rods with pauters out of his own pocket and clearly said he knew he was pushing it and took responsibility for the rods bending....so why do you need to come on here and further rub it in his face and tell him "dont wine"
He also clearly said when he purchsed the 650$ rods they had no power rating nor did they tell him they would take 200 hp so he assumed they would handle a good amount of power...which they couldnt and didnt ....

The magic word, D@nnY, that you quoted, is assumed. Plus the correct spelling is master. I assumed that these $650.00 dollar rods, that weigh 25% less than these other rods, and should accelerate faster, would be OK. Guess what, they were not, suck it up, I made a mistake.
