Air Filters for Turbo use
What type of air filter will allow for the most air flow for a turbo setup, particularly an SC61...??
I currently have a mushroom style filter w/ a spongy filter material.. it looks very cheaply made, but is new so I may end up using it anyway.. I also have a paper type cone filter, NO NAME brand , too..
Let me know what's worked best for u guys.. And No, I"m not gonna run my turbo w/ just a screen and pantyhose..
btw, i also was able to route my air filter outside of the engine bay.. will post pics tomm...

you need to know cfm from your hp level, then get filter large enough to flow that much cfm, getting larger filter than needed will not yeld more hp, but doesn't hurt if you have space to fit it. i'm using k&n btw.

Apexi, GReddy, Blitz or HKS and the like will all cater for all needs regardless of your HP. They will flow in excess of your hp goal. The only difference would be how much better they flow and how good the dirt filtration is relative to each other. Tests between all these brands shows that the Apexi flows better and has better filtration than the rest of the pack. However, this test was conducted on a Supra TT...

Re: Air Filters for Turbo use (swlabhot)
I'm just running a fram paper cone. Think this kills some HP? I've been wondering if it would be worth it or not to get a K&N.
Bump for the pics of the filter outside the engine bay.

Spork,
I'd rather have the K&N because they are generally sturdy, and less likely to get a hole or have filter material suck into the engine. I've run a few of those on another car. Power will be +/- a couple of HP, not enough to worry about. Sponges are pretty good but can disintegrate after a long time if you don't keep them maintained.
YMMV..

i don't know cfm on these, but i know that different k%n filters are rated for different CFM, depending on size of filter.

Anyone try the AEM dry synthetic filter yet? I don't have one, just curious because AEM is a reputable filter and not mentioned in noones posts.

Re: (D15Bbigred)
u gotta take the measures of your "free" space to see which one fits the best.
On my case using a ramhorn mani and a t3/t04 with a 3 inch inlet i´m using the KN-3570, couldnt fit a bigger one.

I'm running an AEM and really like it. A lot of people don't know about them, and K&N is the most proven, so that's by far the most popular. The comparison test of the Apexi filter that's been creating sales for them is not the same filter they have now. There are no other tests comparing all these filters, so we really don't know which filter is the best. I had an Apexi, but didn't like the fact they aren't technically meant to be cleaned. AEM is a durable synthetic material, K&N is cotton, and Apexi is some kind of flannel.

I used a AEM no-oil filter on my last setup. Worked fine...nothing to complain about.

I have the filter mentioned. THey make good claims regarding HP but I can't tell a difference from my Akimoto filter at all. Price was right so I bought it.
