Awesome job
If this is how you do the exterior I can't imagine the quality that will go into the interior and the engine.
What's with that weird bulbous Budweiser bottle you were bleeding the brakes into?

more people told me to get it finished at a shop..I have selective hearing and all i heard was "get it finished"
wetsanded behind the bumper support and door jams. i'm going to remove the hatch and sand that door jam too. installed the R fender that i picked up from the junkyard. after sanding off the old paint i found bondo in the corner and the block revealed high spots along the hoodline front to back.
the cf hood was too far gone to be saved. painted it white, blocked it, filled all the low spots with spot putty, blocked it again and sprayed self etching primer over the filler afterwards.

new hvlp gun arrived (left). it's air consumption is equivalent to the output of my compressor when set at the manufactures spec of 30 psi. notice the difference in the ID of the air inlets. the new regulator is a restriction so it won't be used.

they say that practice makes perfect so I picked up a camry hood to practice on.
I need to work on fine tuning the gun.
http://www.autobody101.com/art...ation

primered the car. 3 coats on the fender and hood and 1 coat on everything else. The new gun laid down the primer nicely w/o orangepeel.

found a crease above the wheel well on the fender and a big low spot in the hood afterwards. fixed the hood and crease. that bondo spot in the corner looks better but not good enough so a new fender will be ordered.

since that 3m sanding (right) block doesn't work too well and made more work for me i made my own. I wrapped a 12" level with paper and used this to block the hood and the doors. The block on the left is a piece of insulation with 3/8" coolant hose in the middle. worked well for blocking the hatch, 1/4 panels and curves on the fenders.

thank you.
i'm watching that thread. i'm glad you decided to go with silver.

those are 16 oz. silhouette bottles. nothing special about them except they're the most bang for the buck at the corner store.
thank you.

1st figure out what kind of paint you want. if you're using single stage clear isn't required. you'll need blocks, tack cloths, wax/grease remover, rags, masking paper, mixing cups, stirrers, strainers, thinner (for gun cleanup). clean dry air is essential. you also need to understand "flash times" and "atomization". read up on reducers. make sure your compressor has more stamina than you gun. there's more to it. Pm me or post here if you have questions.

thank you. when the fan is on there's negative static pressure in the garage. I think the fan will work better if the door is cracked and some air is actually moving.

Holy crap man. This is my first time seeing this thread.
I just saw the most recent update, and curiosity bit and I spent over an hour reading every page of the thread.
This is freaking incredible or crazy, can't decide.
I'm painting my entire car myself, but there's no way I'm going to be as thorough as you, your work is incredible.
Big props man

i've heard good things about the brand. the assortment of tips is a plus. if you have a compressor that puts out 15 psi at 30 psi they should work well. if you're using a 120V compressor find a different gun that requires less air.
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 91CRXed »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">any updates on the car ?</TD></TR></TABLE>
let's see... the hose clamp between the piping and compressor came loose. sounded like an explosion, piping bent and the compressor fell over and the tank was dented. when i get time i'm going to a specialty hose store to get a custom hose.
a new fender costs too much so i had to fix the other one. it was full of high spots so i leveled it with a 2x2 and a sheet metal hammer.

primered the car and wetsanded with 600 grit. i really like the gray primer that still remains on the majority of the edges.

there were two tiny spots of bare metal after sanding the rear of the car.

the drivers side door needs to be blocked again. the rear spoiler need to be blocked and primered . still haven't removed the hatch yet and sanded that door jam. i'm going to try to get it done this weekend.

i lived in a condo when i bought my hatch. Over the last 4 years 80% of the mechanical work was done in a parking lot . Management didn't like it but the work continued. if the hood was open i'd say the car wouldn't start. if the car was jacked up i'd say i was changing a flat lol. I moved into a house a year ago and started the paint and bodywork.

I think you'll end up panel painting with that compressor. What's the specs?
picked up a custom hose with 3/4 NPT female threads on both ends (right). Tightened it up and it started to leak at 20 psi. Took it back and told them it leaks between the crimp and the connector. They remade the hose (left) and now it's airtight. The fitting on the right is made out of brass and tapered at the end. it wouldn't have leaked if i was using brass fittings. I'm using galvanized steel and copper which is flush at the end. The fitting on the left is flush and uses a rubber washer to make a seal.

hose installed. looks cleaner and more importantly it's safer.

set the hood in place and secured the latch, put one bolt in each fender, started her up and drove around the block a few times. everytime i turned the corner i had to lean forward, reach around the windshield and hold the hood in place.
thanks.

And note for anyone compressore shopping. DONT BUY AN OILLESS COMPRESSOR!! they are loud as fawk, to the point you cant hear someone talking to you on the other side of my 4 car garage. just a heads up.
