your gun needs 13 cfm @ 50 psi. A 120V compressor won't produce that. An inexpensive 208/230V might be able to keep up. your regulator should be set at 50 with the trigger pulled.
if you tried to spray the whole car at once by the time you finished pressure at the reg would be in the upper 20's or low 30's. if you want to maintain 50 psi you'll end up painting one panel at a time. there should be a sticker or tag on the compressor with the specs. it will say x cfm at 40 psi and x psi at 90 psi. post the specs.

exactly. for those using a 120V compressor this gun may be able to keep up.
http://www.harborfreight.com/c...earch type in item # 90977. it requires 5.9 cfm @ 30 psi.

with a spare 17 gal tank your compressor will see a bigger load. It will run longer to produce 135 or 175 psi before it cuts out. it will have a tad more stamina but once the tank pressure reaches 100 psi, the compressor energizes the 17 gal tank will be useless.

i agree. i'd never buy another oilless compressor. the loudest noise i want to hear is the belt slipping on startup. after that it should be fairly quiet. another thing to consider when shopping is the size of the air outlet. many 120V compressors come with restrictive 1/4" npt fittings. The v in "hvlp gun" stands for volume. restrictivive fittings decrease air volume. with the stock setup the impact gun struggled to crack a lugnut. after the piping was built and at the same pressure lugnuts seem handtight when impacting them off.

Eventually the husky will get sold and this will replace it. I've already installed the breaker in the circuit panel. 18 cfm @ 90 psi ftw. cheaper than the top of the line husky and almost twice the output.

HAHA. My neighbors havent said anything yet. They all just drive by looking in my garage when I have the door open. I think they think I am building a rocket in there or something. I cannot wait till I start up the bodywork....my neighbors will love me then.

yep you'll be panel painting. know anybody with a 120V portable compressor? if you had another you'd be able to make 13 cfm @ 50 psi and supply your gun with enough air.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Egonamikal88 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Man, Ive been reading all about this project and its good stuff. are you referring to the 1st paint job? That was single stage b-35m after wetsanding. at the time i didn't know that you weren't supposed to wetsand a metallic single stage paint. good luck with your project.

update- if i took these to the recycler as is i'd be paid for "irony aluminum copper".
value increases when you sawzall off the u-tubes and copper headers. after the copper is removed use a hammer to remove the sheet metal on the end. after the coils are chopped up you're paid for copper and radiator. recycled 531 lbs of radiator and 42 lbs of copper.

went to the paint store afterwards and bought 1 gal of omni basecoat (mbc 16136) for the car and a quart for the camry hood. picked up a gal of thinner and a gal of slow reducer (mr187).

when the hose clamps came loose on the compressor, it caused a caulking gun to land on the spoiler. All chips fixed with icing.

finally got around to removing the rear hatch. after this jam is primed/sanded the car will be ready for paint.

primered the drivers door and rear spoiler. accidentally ran over the fuel filler lid when pushing the car into the driveway.
ordered a new fuel sending unit, rear ducts, fuel filler lid, roof moulding clips, p72 cam cap and h22 lost motion assemblies.

tonight i'm going to figure out how to make my own compression/leakdown tester.

once you've found another compressor pick up a galvanized "T" fitting. you may also need a 2"-3" nipple. remove the regulator from one of the compresors and install the T. reinstall the regulator. connect the other compressor to the open port on the T.

The regulator on the compressor with a T should be set @ 50 psi w/ the trigger pulled.
The regulator on the compressor w/o the T should be opened up all the way.

i use loctite 242 on the threads before tightening.

built a leakdown/compression tester. here's the pics from start to finish. if anyone tries this wear safety glasses or a full face shield when welding or brazing. also keep in mind this tester will see pressures from 100-200psi maybe more. double check everything and be safe when working with pneumatics.

started out cutting through the insulator/electrode right above the hex nut with a grinder. on the bottom i cut off the insulator/electrode and the gap. My cutting wheel quickly disappeared. switched to a diamond blade that cut like butter.

it takes a couple light taps to push the insulator out through the top.

change of plans.
I cut the 1/4" npt threads off an 8" galvanized pipe nipple and tried to rethread it using a m14x1.25 die. the od of the pipe was bigger than the id of the die.

too hard to thread it in straight so i tapered the end.

connection options. didn't spend too much time on this piece. it was used for r&d.

used bronze flux coated lincoln electric welding rods to make a restrictor out of an 1/4" npt close nipple. drilled a hole afterwards with a 1/16" drill bit. The restrictor must be installed after the regulator to create a differential and work properly. w/o the restrictor the tester is useless because both gages will read the same.

setup to do a compression test. liquid filled gage maxes out at 300 psi.

install the 100 psi gage, reg setup, compressed air and it's a leakdown tester.

a drain **** is installed on the top of the cross to relieve pressure. oem honda fuel injector o ring makes a seal between the head and tester. loctite 242 was used on all threads. pressurized it tonight. no leaks so far. gage on reg reads 100 psi and the other gage read 0 as i expected.
I did cyl 1 just for fun on a cold motor. Didn't bother finding tdc on the compression stroke. hooked up some compressed air and opened the valve. the crank spun around a few times i heard air escaping somewhere. covered the exhaust and the pressure built up.

you can get 5 h22 lmas for the price of 1 b16 lma. .04" washers are used as a shim to make up the height difference.

pressure tested the compression tester. Now i feel safe using it on the car.

ideal conditions for painting are 70 deg 50%rh. 71 deg and 52% rh today. told my wife i was painting and the smell would be minimal. "can't you do it tomorrow when i'm gone?" My response "no". sealed the door, air handler and attic and got busy.

practiced on the camry hood. this is my first time shooting base with the new gun, and first time using a basecoat/clearcoat system. garage door was open and the exhaust fan wasn't used.
4 coats of basecoat and 4 coats of clear.

The fumes didn't make it into the house. now that i can paint whenever i want, i'll be able to make progress and continue taking my time.

thanks for the positive feedback.

Thats awesome you can paint at your house now. Good job on talking the wife into it..haha. I am getting ready to buy a new house...bigger garage! But its still attached to the house so I am goign to have to do the same thing you did. Plastic everything up and make a ventalation system. Either way, hood looks good man.
