I believe u have to be going over 20 miles an hour or something like that for vtec to work. since u vss is no working it is not reading ur speed so no engagment. First unplug the sensor and clean it out with a Qtip. If that does not work unbolt the sensor and than clean it and put it back in. If that doesnt work put vaseline all over it. if that doesnt work buy a new sensor. If that doesnt work set fire to ur car and collect insurance money!

Yes you must be going over 10 MPH and the ecu has to get a CORRECT reading from the VSS. (meaning the spedo dosent jump all over like ive seen)
i dont know how much one runs but it might be 100~$
Also just double check alllllll the connection wires to the VSS. its located on the Firewall side of the transmission near where the differental is (where the axles plug in)

all i see connected to the VSS is a connector going into the sensor and all of the wires seem to be fine.

YS1= cable type VSS.

is your speedometer working at all?
if not, check to see if the speedo cable is slightly popped out....if its popped out, that's probably why its not working.

The VSS is one of the main ingredients in allowing vtec to kick on. So no VSS, no vtec. Also, if you tampered with your gauge cluster at all, check that connection of the speedo on that end too..

i was getting code 17 and it turned out the mechanic that put in my new tranny just didn't plug the speedo into the tranny all the way. it took me months to figure that out. what a dummy

If it's a cable VSS, it's all metal, and it uses a cable, no wires.

Here's a test for your cable/vss sensor.

Use a portable drill to spin the speedo cable and have a buddy sit in the car to see if the speedo moves. Try clockwise/counter clockwise, because I couldn't swear which one is the correct for positive speed readngs <not reversing>.

This will tell you if the cable/speedo works.

The only way to test the tranny's vss is to jack up the front end, and spin the wheels while watching the VSS inside with a flashlight. See if it spins while the tires are spinning.

NOTE: it will spin slowly inside the VSS, so watch closely, there's only a single keyway that you will see moving.

Hope this helps!
